Abstract

Systems for immobilizing a patient are disclosed. The system includes at least one preform formed from a low melting temperature thermoplastic, so that the preform may be formed to the anatomy of the patient, at least one frame coupled to the at least one preform, and at least one support to support the anatomy of the patient. The system also includes at least one lock mechanism coupled to at least one of the frame and the support in order to couple the at least one frame to the at least one support, and at least one adjuster mechanism coupled to at least one of the at least one frame and the at least one support in order to selectively adjust a distance between the at least one frame and the at least one support while the at least one frame is coupled to the at least one support.

Claims (41)

1. A system for immobilizing an anatomy of a patient, the system comprising:

at least one preform formed from a low melting temperature thermoplastic, the at least one preform being configured to be formed to the anatomy of the patient;

at least one frame wherein a first frame of the at least one frame is coupled to the at least one preform;

at least one support configured to support the anatomy of the patient;

at least one lock coupled to at least one of (i) the first frame and (ii) the at least one support and configured to couple the first frame to the at least one support;

at least one adjuster coupled to at least one of (i) the first frame and (ii) the at least one support, configured to selectively adjust a distance between the first frame and the at least one support, and configured to tighten or loosen a fit of the preform with respect to the anatomy of the patient while the first frame is coupled to the at least one support;

an index configured to index rotation of the at least one adjuster and provide discrete adjustment of the distance between the first frame and the at least one support; and

one or more visual indicators associated with the first frame that indicate the distance between the first frame and the at least one support.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one lock and the at least one adjuster are co-located with one another.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one lock comprises a locking pin inserted through an opening of the at least one adjuster.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one adjuster selectively adjusts the distance between the first frame and the at least one support by rotation of the at least one adjuster.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjuster includes a surface that bears against at least one of (i) the at least one support, (ii) the first frame, or (iii) a component interposed between the at least one support and the first frame.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjuster and the at least one lock are not co-located with respect to one another.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one adjuster is positioned on at least one of (i) the first frame, (ii) the at least one support, and (iii) at least one interposed element.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the at least one lock is positioned on at least one of (i) the first frame and (ii) the at least one support.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjuster is integrated into the at least one support.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one adjuster comprises a channel adapted to receive a portion of the at least one lock.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one adjuster is configured to selectively adjust the distance between the first frame and the at least one support by rotation of the at least one adjuster.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein rotation of the at least one adjuster adjusts a position of the channel with respect to the at least one support.

13. A method of immobilizing an anatomy of a patient for treatment using a system comprising:

at least one preform formed from a low melting temperature thermoplastic, the at least one preform being configured to be formed to the anatomy of the patient;

at least one frame wherein a first frame of the at least one frame is coupled to the at least one preform;

at least one support configured to support the anatomy of the patient;

at least one lock coupled to at least one of (i) the first frame and (ii) the at least one support and configured to couple the first frame to the at least one support; and

at least one adjuster operable independently from the at least one lock, operable when the at least one lock is in a locked state or in an unlocked state, and coupled to at least one of (i) the first frame and (ii) the at least one support and configured to selectively adjust a distance between the first frame and the at least one support while the first frame is coupled to the at least one support; an index configured to index rotation of the at least one adjuster and provide discrete adjustment of the distance between the first frame and the at least one support;

the method comprising:

forming, from the first frame coupled to the at least one preform, an immobilization element corresponding to the anatomy of the patient by:

heating the at least one preform to a forming temperature;

positioning the at least one preform with respect to the anatomy of the patient and the at least one support; and

activating the at least one lock to lock the position of the at least one preform with respect to the at least one support and immobilize the anatomy of the patient with respect to the at least one support with the immobilization element; and

adjusting, while the anatomy of the patient is in place in the immobilization element, a discrete distance, in predetermined increments, between the first frame of the immobilization element and the at least one support by selectively adjusting the at least one adjuster when the at least one lock is in the locked state or in the unlocked state.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising conducting stereotactic radiosurgery on the anatomy of the patient.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising conducting radiation therapy on the anatomy of the patient.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising, prior to the adjusting step, deactivating the at least one lock to unlock the immobilization element from the at least one support.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adjusting step is performed while the at least one lock is activated.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

deactivating the at least one lock to unlock the immobilization element from the at least one support; and

repeating the activating and adjusting steps while the anatomy of the patient is in place in the immobilization element.

19. The method of claim 13 , the at least one adjuster comprising an adjustable shim.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the adjusting comprises adjusting the adjustable shim.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one adjuster is configured to selectively adjust the distance between each frame of the at least one frame and the at least one support, and configured to tighten or loosen a fit of the at least one preform with respect to the anatomy of the patient while each frame of the at least one frame is coupled to the at least one support.
