Abstract

Systems and methods are provided herein for determining aspects of a user interface, and determining therefrom a service or device that corresponds to the user interface. In doing so, a user's activity can be profiled, and aggregate usage data over a population of particular devices and OTT applications can be tracked. Moreover, losses and gains of popularity of services or devices may be monitored.

Claims (60)

1. A method for resolving an unknown user interface of a known service, the method comprising:

capturing a fingerprint of a user interface;

accessing a database comprising entries of characteristics of fingerprints of a plurality of user interfaces;

comparing characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries;

determining, based on the comparing, that the characteristics of the fingerprint do not fully match the characteristics of any of the entries;

in response to the determining, comparing portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries;

determining a first fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces where a first portion of the portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint matches characteristics of the first fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces;

determining a second fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces where a second portion of the portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint matches characteristics of the second fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces;

accessing a knowledge graph that describes relationships between the entries;

determining, based on the relationships, a relationship between a first entry of the entries corresponding to the first fingerprint and a second entry of the entries corresponding to the second fingerprint; and

determining that the user interface is a particular user interface based on the relationship.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein capturing the fingerprint of the user interface comprises:

identifying elements of an image that comprise the user interface;

identifying elements of the image that do not comprise the user interface;

isolating the elements of the image that comprise the user interface from the elements of the image that do not comprise the user interface; and

capturing a fingerprint of the elements of the image that comprise the user interface.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining, based on the comparing, that the characteristics of the fingerprint do not fully match the characteristics of any of the entries comprises determining that the user interface is unknown to the database.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries comprises:

identifying a portion of the characteristics of the fingerprint comprising a discrete component of the user interface; and

determining whether the characteristics of an entry of the entries comprise the discrete component.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein determining the first fingerprint is determined based on the determining of whether the characteristics of the entry of the entries comprise the discrete component.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the relationships between the entries comprise a service common to the set of entries.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the knowledge graph describes relationships by indicating discrete components of user interfaces that substantially match discrete components of other user interfaces.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating an entry for the database that corresponds to the particular user interface.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

capturing a third fingerprint of a second user interface;

comparing characteristics of the third fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries of the database; and

determining that the second user interface is the particular user interface based on the comparing.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein capturing the fingerprint comprises object recognition.

11. A system for resolving an unknown user interface of a known service, the system comprising:

communications circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

capture a fingerprint of a user interface;

access, using the communications circuitry, a database comprising entries of characteristics of fingerprints of a plurality of user interfaces;

compare characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries;

determine, based on the comparing, that the characteristics of the fingerprint do not fully match the characteristics of any of the entries;

in response to the determining, compare portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries;

determine a first fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces where a first portion of the portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint matches characteristics of the first fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces;

determine a second fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces where a second portion of the portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint matches characteristics of the second fingerprint of the plurality of user interfaces;

access, using the communications circuitry, a knowledge graph that describes relationships between the entries;

determine, based on the relationships, a relationship between a first entry of the entries corresponding to the first fingerprint and a second entry of the entries corresponding to the second fingerprint, and

determine that the user interface is a particular user interface based on the relationship.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when capturing the fingerprint of the user interface, to:

identify elements of an image that comprise the user interface;

identify elements of the image that do not comprise the user interface;

isolate the elements of the image that comprise the user interface from the elements of the image that do not comprise the user interface; and

capture a fingerprint of the elements of the image that comprise the user interface.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when determining, based on the comparing, that the characteristics of the fingerprint do not fully match the characteristics of any of the entries, to determine that the user interface is unknown to the database.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured, when comparing portions of the characteristics of the fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries, to:

identify a portion of the characteristics of the fingerprint comprising a discrete component of the user interface; and

determine whether the characteristics of an entry of the entries comprise the discrete component.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining the first fingerprint is based on the determining of whether the characteristics of the entry of the entries comprise the discrete component.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the relationships between the entries comprise a service common to the set of entries.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the knowledge graph describes relationships by indicating discrete components of user interfaces that substantially match discrete components of other user interfaces.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to generate an entry for the database that corresponds to the particular user interface.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

capture a third fingerprint of a second user interface;

compare characteristics of the third fingerprint against the characteristics of the entries of the database; and

determine that the second user interface is the particular user interface based on the comparing.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein capturing the fingerprint comprises object recognition.
