Abstract

A nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) device having a hollow body with a proximal wall, a distal wall, and an exhaust port extending through the distal wall. A proximal tubular member extends through the proximal wall of the body and is arranged such that a stream of gas entering the body through the proximal tubular member will exit the proximal tubular member in a first direction and then enter the exhaust port. A nozzle extends through the body and is arranged such that a stream of gas entering the body through the nozzle will exit the nozzle and then enter the proximal tubular member in a second direction that is opposite the first direction.

Claims (26)

1. A nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) device comprising:

a body having a proximal end and a distal end, a chamber at the proximal end of the body, and a first passage extending from the chamber through the distal end of the body;

a plurality of nozzles, each having an outlet end that projects into the first passage, between the chamber and the distal end of the body, the plurality of nozzles arranged to direct a fluid flow into the first passage such that the fluid flow from each nozzle impinges upon each other and combines to flow through the first passage toward the distal end of the body;

wherein an opposing fluid flow through the first passage from the distal end toward the proximal end of the body redirects the fluid flow from each nozzle to flow toward the chamber.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein an exhaust port extends through the proximal end of the body and is fluidly coupled to the chamber.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nozzles are non-parallel relative to each other and relative to a centerline through the first passage.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of nozzles are transversely aligned relative to the centerline through the first passage.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein a fluid flow entering the first passage through each nozzle impinges upon each other at a point displaced from the centerline through the first passage.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nozzles extend into the first passage from an inner surface of the first passage.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a common manifold, each nozzle comprising an inlet end fluidly coupled to the common manifold.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein a second passage extends from the chamber through the distal end of the body.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein a slot extends through a wall of the first passage and a wall of the second passage, proximal to the distal end of the body.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the body comprises a pressure monitoring port fluidly connected to the radial slot of the first passage and the second passage.

11. A nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) device comprising:

a body having a proximal end and a distal end, a chamber at the proximal end of the body, and a first passage extending from the chamber through the distal end of the body;

a plurality of nozzles, each having an outlet end that projects from an inner surface of the first passage into the first passage, between the chamber and the distal end of the body;

wherein each outlet end is oriented to direct a fluid flow from the nozzle into the first passage such that the fluid flow from each nozzle impinges upon each other and combines to flow through the first passage toward the distal end of the body and wherein an opposing fluid flow through the first passage from the distal end toward the proximal end of the body redirects the fluid flow from each nozzle to flow toward the chamber.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein an exhaust port extends through the proximal end of the body and is fluidly coupled to the chamber.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of nozzles are non-parallel relative to each other and relative to a centerline through the first passage.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of nozzles are transversely aligned relative to the centerline through the first passage.

15. The device of claim 13 , wherein a fluid flow entering the first passage through each nozzle impinges upon each other at a point displaced from the centerline through the first passage.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein the body comprises a common manifold, each nozzle comprising an inlet end fluidly coupled to the common manifold.

17. The device of claim 11 , wherein a second passage extends from the chamber through the distal end of the body.

18. The device of claim 17 , wherein a slot extends through a wall of the first passage and a wall of the second passage, proximal to the distal end of the body.

19. The device of claim 18 , wherein the body comprises a pressure monitoring port fluidly connected to the radial slot of the first passage and the second passage.

20. The device of claim 11 , wherein each nozzle comprises a cavity with an inner surface having a cross-sectional width that tapers from an inlet end toward the outlet end.
