Abstract

As described herein, the invention includes a building underlayment sheet that comprises an underlayment lamina having a top surface and a bottom surface. The bottom surface includes an interior portion and a selvage portion that extends from the interior portion of the bottom surface to a terminal distal edge of the sheet and the interior portion of the bottom surface bears a self adhesive layer. The selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a bonding composition that is capable of bonding to a top surface of a second underlayment lamina to form a full lap joint. In some embodiments, the self adhesive layer includes an asphalt, a polymer such as poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene)(SBS), and a tackifier, and/or the bonding composition includes asphalt, a polymer such as poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), ground tire rubber (GTR), and tackifier. Also included are building assemblies that include the application of one or more of the underlayment sheets to a building surface, such as a roof surface and methods of installing the underlayment and waterproofing a roof surface.

Claims (26)

1. A building underlayment sheet comprising: an underlayment lamina having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the bottom surface includes an interior portion and a selvage portion that extends from the interior portion of the bottom surface to a terminal distal edge of the sheet, wherein the interior portion of the bottom surface bears a self adhesive layer, and the selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a bonding composition that is capable of bonding to a top surface of a second underlayment lamina to form a full lap joint.

2. The sheet of claim 1 , further comprising a second self adhesive layer that is on the top surface of the lamina.

3. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein each of the selvage portion and the interior portion of the bottom surfaces bears a self adhesive layer and the bonding composition is laid over the self adhesive layer of the selvage portion.

4. The sheet of claim 1 that is an underlayment for at least one building component selected from tile, shingles, siding, clapboard, brick, stone, wood shakes, stucco, 20 metal panels, wherein the building component is applied to the top surface.

5. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the lamina is composed of a material selected from a non-woven material, a woven material, a saturated felt, a porous material, a non-porous material, and a polymer.

6. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the lamina is composed of a material selected from polyester, fiberglass, and combinations of the same.

7. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the selvage portion extends about 1 to about 5 inches from the terminal distal edge.

8. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the selvage portion extends a distance selected from about 3 inches and about 4 inches from the terminal distal edge.

9. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the self adhesive layer comprises an asphalt, polymer, and a tackifier.

10. The sheet of claim 5 , wherein the self adhesive layer further comprises a filler.

11. The sheet of claim 5 , wherein the self adhesive layer further comprises a filler that is selected from limestone, chalk, talc, carbon fibers, carbon black, carbon nanotubes, laponite, silica, ash, china clay, smectite and mixtures thereof.

12. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the bonding composition is distributed discontinuously on the bottom surface of the sheet.

13. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the bonding composition comprises asphalt, poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene), ground tire rubber (GTR), and tackifier.

14. The sheet of claim 13 , wherein the bonding composition further comprises a filler.

15. The sheet of claim 13 wherein the bonding composition further comprises a filler selected from is selected from limestone, talc, carbon fibers, carbon black, carbon nanotubes, laponite, silica, ash, china clay, smectite and mixtures thereof.

16. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the top surface bears a layer comprising, an asphalt, a modified asphalt, a polymer, and mixtures thereof.

17. The sheet of claim 1 , wherein the top surface bears a layer comprising a UV reflecting material, a UV absorbing material, a fire retardant, a texturizing material, and mixtures thereof.

18. The sheet of claim 1 , further comprising a first release film having an upper face that is detachably applied to at least one of the bottom surface or the top surface of the lamina.

19. The sheet of claim 18 , wherein the first release film is a flexible material.

20. The sheet of claim 18 , wherein the release first film is composed of a material 25 selected from polypropylene and polyethylene.

21. The sheet of claim 18 wherein the upper face of the release film is coated with an anti-sticking composition prior to the application of the upper face to the bottom surface of the lamina.

22. The sheet of claim 21 , wherein the anti-sticking composition is selected from a wax, an oil, a silicone, and poly(l, 1,2,2-tetrafluoroethylene).

23. A building assembly comprising: a. a building surface; and b. the building underlayment sheet of claim 1 , wherein the underlayment sheet is adhered to the building surface.

24. A building underlayment sheet comprising: an underlayment lamina having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the bottom surface includes an interior portion and a selvage portion that extends from the interior portion of the bottom surface to a terminal distal edge of the sheet, wherein each of the interior portion of the bottom surface and the selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a self adhesive layer, and the selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a bonding composition that is laid over the self adhesive layer and which is capable of bonding to a top surface of a second underlayment lamina to form a full lap joint.

25. A building underlayment sheet comprising: an underlayment lamina having a top surface and a bottom surface, wherein the bottom surface includes an interior portion and a selvage portion that extends from the interior portion of the bottom surface to a terminal distal edge of the sheet, wherein each of the interior portion of the bottom surface and the selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a first self adhesive layer, the top surfaces bears a second self adhesive layer; and the selvage portion of the bottom surface bears a bonding composition that is laid over the self adhesive layer and which is capable of bonding to a top surface of a second underlayment lamina to form a full lap joint.
