Abstract

Briefly, a method for verifying the visual perceptibility of a display is provided. An intended message is written to a bistable display. Pixels that comprise portions of the message are measured and evaluated to determine if the message actually displayed on the bistable display was perceptible by a human or a machine. In some cases, information regarding the message actually perceivable from the display may be stored for later use. Responsive to determining that a message is perceivable or not perceivable, alarms may be set, one or more third parties notified, or additional display features may be set.

Claims (47)

1. A method for verifying the visual perceptibility of a message on an indicator, the indicator having integral setting circuitry and detecting circuitry, comprising:

providing an intended message from a memory;

setting, using the integral setting circuitry, the visual state of a set of message pixels in the indicator that are intended, when set, to present the intended message on the indicator;

detecting, using the integral detecting circuitry, the states of a set of detection pixels;

evaluating the states of the set of detection pixels; and

using the evaluated states of the detection pixels to determine whether or not the intended message was visually perceptible at the time the detection pixels were detected

wherein the indicator is a bistable indicator, and further determining that the intended message was not visually perceptible on the bistable indicator at the time the detection pixels were detected, and responsive to that determination wiping out the message on bistable indicator, refreshing the bistable indicator, generating an alarm, generating an alarm message, or transmitting a message to a third party.

2. A method for verifying the perceptibility of a message written to a display, comprising:

providing a display that sets the visual state of pixels according to an intended message;

detecting the states of at least some of the pixels used to set the message on the display;

defining a contrast threshold level for the detected pixels;

identifying pixels that fail the contrast threshold level;

determining if the failed pixels create an ambiguity between the intended message and what was presented on the display at the time the pixels were detected; and

determining whether the ambiguity would cause the intended message not to be perceivable or understandable.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the display comprises a bistable display.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the determining step has determined that the failed pixels do not create an ambiguity in the intended message, and further comprise the step of verifying that the intended message is perceptible.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the determining step has determined that the failed pixels create an ambiguity in the message, and further comprise the step of verifying that the message is not sufficiently perceptible.

6. The method according to claim 2 wherein the indicator is an electrophoretic indicator.

7. The method according to claim 2 wherein the message written to the display is refreshed responsive to determining that there is an ambiguity in the message.

8. The method according to claim 2 wherein the message cannot be changed during the detecting step.

9. The method according to claim 2 , further including collecting time information that is related to the time when the state of pixels was detected.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the verifying step further comprises verifying whether the display was operating to perceptively display the message at the time when the state of the pixels was detected.

11. The method according to claim 2 wherein the pixels comprise elongated segments.

12. The method according to claim 2 wherein the pixels comprise dots.

13. The method according to claim 2 wherein the message is to be humanly perceptible.

14. The method according to claim 2 wherein the message is to be machine perceptible.

15. A method for verifying the visual perceptibility of a message on an indicator, comprising:

providing an intended message from a memory;

setting the visual state of a set of message pixels in the indicator that are intended, when set, to present the intended message on the indicator;

detecting the states of a set of detection pixels;

evaluating the states of the set of detection pixels;

using the evaluated states of the detection pixels to determine whether or not the intended message was visually perceptible at the time the detection pixels were detected; and

collecting a device ID uniquely associated with the indicator.

16. A method for verifying the visual perceptibility of a message on an indicator, comprising:

providing an intended message from a memory;

setting the visual state of a set of message pixels in the indicator that are intended, when set, to present the intended message on the indicator;

detecting the states of a set of detection pixels;

evaluating the states of the set of detection pixels;

using the evaluated states of the detection pixels to determine whether or not the intended message was visually perceptible at the time the detection pixels were detected; and

collecting location information that is related to the time when the state of pixels was detected.

17. A method for determining what is visually presented on an indicator, comprising:

detecting the states of a set of detection pixels, the detected states indicative of visual states of pixels actually presented on the indicator at the time the pixels were detected;

evaluating the detected states of the set of detection pixels;

determining what pattern was presented on the indicator at the time the pixels were detected;

detecting the state of a set of detection pixels at a second time;

evaluating the states of the set of detection pixels that were detected at the second time; and

determining what pattern was presented on the indicator at the second time the pixels were detected.
