Abstract

A method and system for performing a total joint arthroplasty procedure on a patient's damaged bone region. A CT image or other suitable image is formed of the damaged bone surfaces, and location coordinate values (x n ,y n ,z n ) are determined for a selected sequence of bone surface locations using the CT image data. A mathematical model z=f(x,y) of a surface that accurately matches the bone surface coordinates at the selected bone slice locations, or matches surface normal vector components at selected bone surface locations, is determined. The model provides a production file from which a cutting jig and an implant device (optional), each patient-specific and having controllable alignment, are fabricated for the damaged bone by automated processing. At this point, the patient is cut open (once), the cutting jig and a cutting instrument are used to remove a selected portion of the bone and to provide an exposed planar surface, the implant device is optionally secured to and aligned with the remainder of the bone, and the patient's incision is promptly repaired.

Claims (24)

1. A tibial arthroplasty jig for preparing a tibia undergoing an arthroplasty to receive a tibial arthroplasty implant that is aligned with the tibia via an aperture formed in the tibia via the tibial arthroplasty jig, the tibia including an end, a non-resected bone surface and a longitudinal axis, the tibial arthroplasty jig comprising:

a mating surface configured to engage the non-resected bone surface in a matching manner on account of a patient-specific nature of the mating surface, the matching manner registering a single relative position of the mating surface relative to the non-resected bone surface, the patient specific nature of the mating surface having been generated in the tibial arthroplasty jig prior to the tibial arthroplasty jig being brought into contact with the non-resected bone surface or employed in the arthroplasty;

a first guide hole configured to guide formation of the aperture in the tibia when the non-resected bone surface is engaged by the mating surface in the matching manner; and

a cutting instrument guide including at least one planar guide surface configured to guide a resection of the tibia when the tibial arthroplasty jig is used to prepare the tibia.

2. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the non-resected bone surface includes at least a portion of the end.

3. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the end includes a tibia proximal end.

4. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first guide hole intersects the mating surface.

5. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first guide hole includes a circular cross-section.

6. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the arthroplasty jig includes a second guide hole.

7. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 6 , wherein the first and the second guide holes are parallel to each other.

8. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein the first guide hole aligns with the longitudinal axis when the tibial arthroplasty jig is placed on the tibia in the matching manner.

9. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the tibial arthroplasty jig is manufactured via at least one of CNC or SLA.

10. A tibial arthroplasty jig for preparing a tibia undergoing an arthroplasty to receive a tibial arthroplasty implant that is aligned with the tibia via an aperture formed in the tibia via the tibial arthroplasty jig, the tibia including an end, a non-resected bone surface and a longitudinal axis, the tibial arthroplasty jig comprising:

a mating surface including a custom fit relationship with the non-resected bone surface, the custom fit relationship registering a single relative position of the mating surface relative to the non-resected bone surface, the custom fit relationship of the mating surface having been generated in the tibial arthroplasty jig prior to the tibial arthroplasty jig being brought into contact with the non-resected bone surface or employed in the arthroplasty;

a first guide hole configured to guide formation of the aperture in the bone mating surface when the mating surface is registered in the single relative position with the non-resected bone surface; and

a cutting instrument guide including at least one planar guide surface configured to guide a resection of the tibia when the tibial arthroplasty jig is used to prepare the tibia.

11. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the first guide hole intersects the mating surface.

12. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the first guide hole includes a circular cross-section.

13. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the arthroplasty jig includes a second guide hole.

14. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 13 , wherein the first and the second guide holes are parallel to each other.

15. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the first guide hole aligns with the longitudinal axis when the tibial arthroplasty jig is placed on the tibia in the custom fit relationship.

16. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the non-resected bone surface includes at least a portion of the end.

17. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein the end includes a tibial proximal end.

18. The tibial arthroplasty jig of claim 10 , wherein at least a portion of the tibial arthroplasty jig is manufactured via at least one of CNC or SLA.
