Pen needle dispensing apparatus
View Patent ↗An apparatus is disclosed for storing and dispensing a pen needle for an injection device, including a packaging assembly including a pliable outer cover, the outer cover having a hub portion, a needle portion disposed at a distal end of the hub portion, and a flange disposed at a proximal end of the hub portion, the hub portion having internally protruding splines or other structures for engaging a hub of a pen needle. The hub portion is sufficiently pliable for a user to press gripping portions of the hub portion so that corresponding internal portions of the hub portion between the splines contacts the pen needle hub to increase a surface area contact between the outer cover and a pen needle therein.
1. An apparatus for storing and dispensing a pen needle for an injection device, the apparatus comprising:
an outer cover, the outer cover having a hub portion, a needle portion disposed at a distal end of the hub portion, and a flange disposed at a proximal end of the hub portion;
wherein the hub portion is sufficiently pliable for a user to press gripping portions of the hub portion so that internal portions of the hub portion corresponding to the gripping portions directly contact a hub of the pen needle to increase a surface area contact between the outer cover and the pen needle therein.
2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein:
the hub portion includes internally protruding structures for engaging a hub of a pen needle; and
the corresponding internal portions of the hub portion are disposed between the internally protruding structures.
3. The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the internally protruding structures comprise splines separated by gaps.
4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the packaging assembly further comprises a sterility barrier engaging the flange to selectively maintain a sterile environment within the outer cover.
5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the flange is substantially polygonal.
6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the flange is substantially rectangular.
7. A plurality of apparatuses according to claim 5 , wherein the assemblies outer covers are separably joined along edges of the flanges.
8. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the flange is sized to provide user-graspable areas on opposing edges and on opposing faces thereof.
9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an inwardly protruding shoulder disposed between the hub portion and the needle portion, for limiting an insertion depth of the pen needle into the outer cover.
10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the needle portion is substantially frustoconical and the hub portion is substantially cylindrical.
11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein pressing gripping portions of the hub portion increases a gripping force of the protruding structures on the pen needle.
12. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the needle portion is sufficiently pliable for a user to press the needle portion of the outer cover to contact a needle cover and maintain the needle cover in the outer cover when withdrawing the pen needle from the outer cover.
