Abstract

A nasal delivery device for and a method of delivering a substance, in particular one of a liquid, as a suspension or solution, or a powder containing a medicament, especially systemic or topical pharmaceuticals, or a vaccine to the nasal airway of a subject.

Claims (61)

404 . A nasal delivery device for delivering a substance to a nasal airway of a subject, comprising:

a nosepiece unit configured to fit in a nostril of the subject, the nosepiece unit including a nozzle through which the substance is delivered to the nasal airway of the subject;

a mouthpiece unit configured to fit in a mouth of the subject and receive a flow of exhalation breath from the subject, whereby exhalation by the subject causes closure of a oropharyngeal velum of the subject;

a flow channel fluidly connecting the nosepiece unit and the mouthpiece unit, whereby exhalation breath flows from the mouthpiece unit through the fluid channel and out of the nosepiece unit;

at least one cuff member, which includes at least one lobe, configured to extend into a region of the nasal cavity of the subject and engage an inner wall of the nasal cavity of the subject when fitted in the nasal cavity of the subject; and

a delivery unit for delivering the substance through the nozzle of the nosepiece unit.

405 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein the substance is a powder.

406 . The delivery device of claim 405 , wherein the powder is a pharmaceutical.

407 . The delivery device of claim 406 , wherein the powder is an anti-migraine composition.

408 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein the substance is delivered to a site within the nasal airway of the subject.

409 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the inferior meatus.

410 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the middle meatus.

411 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes an inferior part of the middle meatus.

412 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the superior meatus.

413 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the inferior nasal concha.

414 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the middle nasal concha.

415 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the superior nasal concha.

416 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the olfactory region.

417 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a sinus ostia.

418 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at a least sinus infundibulum.

419 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the epipharynx.

420 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least adenoids.

421 . The delivery device of claim 408 , wherein the site includes at least tubal ostia.

422 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 1 μm to about 80 μm.

423 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 1 μm to about 50 μm.

424 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 1 μm to about 30 μm.

425 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 10 μm to about 30 μm.

426 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 10 μm to about 20 μm.

427 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 15 μm to about 30 μm.

428 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein the nosepiece is a replaceable unit.

429 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein the at least one cuff member includes a plurality of lobes, the at least one cuff member configured to at least partially block the nasal cavity of the subject.

430 . The delivery device of claim 404 , wherein the delivery unit is configured to deliver the substance to the nozzle in response to the flow of exhalation breath.

431 . A nasal delivery device for delivering a substance to a nasal airway of a subject, comprising:

a nosepiece unit configured to fit in a nostril of the subject, the nosepiece unit including a nozzle through which the substance is delivered to the nasal airway of the subject;

a mouthpiece unit configured to fit in a mouth of the subject and receive a flow of exhalation breath from the subject, whereby exhalation by the subject causes closure of a oropharyngeal velum of the subject;

a flow channel fluidly connecting the nosepiece unit and the mouthpiece unit, whereby exhalation breath flows from the mouthpiece unit through the fluid channel and out of the nosepiece unit; and

a delivery unit for delivering the substance through the nozzle of the nosepiece unit;

wherein the substance is a powder, a pharmaceutical, and an anti-migraine composition.

432 . The delivery device of claim 431 , wherein the substance is delivered to a site within the nasal airway of the subject.

433 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the inferior meatus.

434 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the middle meatus.

435 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes an inferior part of the middle meatus.

436 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the superior meatus.

437 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the inferior nasal concha.

438 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the middle nasal concha.

439 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the superior nasal concha.

440 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the olfactory region.

441 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a sinus ostia.

442 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at a least sinus infundibulum.

443 . The delivery device of claim 432 , wherein the site includes at least a part of the epipharynx.

449 . The delivery device of claim 431 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 10 μm to about 30 μm.

450 . The delivery device of claim 431 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 10 μm to about 20 μm.

451 . The delivery device of claim 431 , wherein more than half of the particles in a particle size distribution of the substance are in the range of about 15 μm to about 30 μm.

452 . The delivery device of claim 431 , further comprising at least one cuff member, wherein the at least one cuff member includes a plurality of lobes, the at least one cuff member configured to at least partially block the nasal cavity of the subject.

453 . The delivery device of claim 431 , wherein the delivery unit is configured to deliver the substance to the nozzle in response to the flow of exhalation breath.
