Abstract

In an air handling system of a uniflow-scavenged, two-stroke cycle opposed-piston engine, one or more engine operating state parameters are sensed, numerical values of air handling parameters based on trapped conditions in a cylinder of the engine at the last port closing of an engine operating cycle are determined in response to the sensed parameters, the numerical values are evaluated, and one or more of the numerical values is adjusted in response to the evaluation. The adjusted numerical values are used to control charge air flow and EGR flow in the air handling system.

Claims (25)

1. A method of operating an opposed-piston engine, comprising:

generating exhaust gas in at least one ported cylinder of the engine;

transporting exhaust gas from an exhaust port of the ported cylinder through an exhaust channel;

recirculating a portion of the exhaust gas from the exhaust channel through an EGR loop;

pressurizing fresh air;

mixing recirculated exhaust gas from the EGR loop with the pressurized fresh air to form charge air;

pressurizing the charge air with a supercharger;

providing the pressurized charge air to an intake port of the ported cylinder;

determining a value of a trapped air handling parameter in response to an engine operating state; and,

adjusting, based on the determined value, charge air flow to the intake port.

2. The method of claim 1 , in which adjusting charge air flow includes one of changing a speed of the supercharger and operating a first valve to shunt charge air flow from an output to an input of the supercharger.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising adjusting exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop based on the determined value.

4. The method of claim 3 , in which adjusting exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop includes operating a second valve to increase or decrease exhaust gas flow through the EGR loop.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop based on the determined value.

6. The method of claim 5 , in which adjusting exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop includes operating a valve in the EGR loop to increase or decrease exhaust gas flow through the EGR loop.

7. A method of operating an opposed-piston engine equipped with one or more ported cylinders and a supercharger, comprising:

pressurizing fresh air to form charge air;

pressurizing the charge air with the supercharger;

providing the pressurized charge air to an intake manifold of the engine;

determining a value of a trapped lambda parameter based on closure of one of an exhaust port and an intake port of a cylinder in response to an engine operating state; and,

adjusting, based on the determined value, charge air flow to the intake manifold.

8. The method of claim 7 , in which adjusting charge air flow includes one of changing a speed of the supercharger and operating a first valve to shunt charge air flow between an output and an input of the supercharger.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising adjusting an exhaust gas flow in an EGR loop of the engine based on the determined value.

10. The method of claim 9 , in which adjusting exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop includes operating a second valve to increase or decrease exhaust gas flow through the EGR loop.

11. The method of claim 7 , in which the engine is further equipped with an EGR loop, further comprising adjusting an exhaust gas flow in the EGR loop of the engine based on the determined value.
