Abstract

Methods for treating a wound include positioning a wound filler having a coating agent containing a fluorescent material proximate the wound. The wound filler is removed after a time period. The wound is then scanned using a fluorescence scanner to determine whether a portion of the wound filler remains at the wound. In response to the portion of the wound filler remaining at the wound, the portion of the wound filler is removed. Other methods and systems are presented.

Claims (40)

1. A method for treating a wound, the method comprising:

positioning a wound filler treated with a liquid coating agent containing fluorescent markers proximate the wound;

removing the wound filler from the wound after a time period;

scanning the wound using a fluorescence scanner to determine whether a residual portion of the wound filler remains at the wound by detecting the fluorescent markers on to the residual portion with the fluorescence scanner; and

responsive to detecting the residual portion of the wound filler remaining at the wound, removing the residual portion of the wound filler from the wound.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescent markers are an ultraviolet dye and the fluorescence scanner is an ultraviolet scanner.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluorescent markers are an infrared dye and the fluorescence scanner is an infrared scanner.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the fluorescence scanner emits infrared light with wavelengths in a range of about 700 nm to 900 nm.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coating agent is applied to a surface of the wound filler.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coating agent is at least partially embedded within the wound filler.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound filler comprises a polyvinyl alcohol adapted to distribute reduced pressure to the wound.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound filler is a reticulated foam adapted to distribute reduced pressure to the wound.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sizing the wound filler prior to positioning the wound filler proximate the wound.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

applying reduced pressure to the wound filler prior to removing the wound filler.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wound filler is a first wound filler, the method further comprising:

responsive to scanning the wound and finding that the first wound filler has been completely removed, positioning a second wound filler having a coating agent proximate the wound.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time period is greater than forty hours.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of scanning the wound comprises using a receiver unit to detect light emitted by the fluorescent markers.

14. A method of treating a tissue site on a patient with reduced pressure, the method comprising:

deploying a manifold treated with a liquid coating agent containing a fluorescent dye proximate the tissue site;

covering the manifold and a portion of intact epidermis of the patient with a sealing member to form a sealed space in which the manifold is disposed, wherein the sealing member has a first side and a second, tissue-facing side;

fluidly coupling a reduced-pressure interface proximate to the first side of the sealing member, wherein the reduced-pressure interface is in fluid communication with the manifold and the tissue site;

fluidly coupling a reduced-pressure source to the reduced-pressure interface;

applying the reduced pressure to the manifold;

removing the manifold from the tissue site after a time period;

scanning the tissue site using a fluorescence scanner to determine whether a residual portion of the manifold remains at the tissue site by detecting the fluorescent dye on the residual portion with the fluorescence scanner; and

responsive to detecting the residual portion of the manifold remaining at the tissue site, removing the residual portion of the manifold from the tissue site.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the fluorescent dye is an ultraviolet or infrared dye.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the ultraviolet or infrared dye is applied to a surface of the manifold.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the ultraviolet or infrared dye is at least partially embedded within the manifold.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the manifold is a polyvinyl alcohol.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the manifold is a reticulated foam.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

sizing the manifold prior to positioning the manifold proximate the tissue site.

21. The method of claim 14 , wherein the manifold is a first manifold, the method further comprising:

after to scanning the tissue site and finding that the first manifold has been completely removed, positioning a second manifold having a coating agent proximate the tissue site.

22. The method of claim 14 , wherein tissue growth into the manifold causes the manifold to tear upon removal of the manifold from the tissue site leaving the portion of the manifold at the tissue site.

23. The method of claim 14 , wherein the step of scanning the tissue site comprises using a receiver unit to detect light emitted by the fluorescent dye.
