Port septum with integral valve
View Patent ↗A septum for a port is provided, the septum having a top wall and a side wall. The side wall can include a pressure-activated valve element for regulating the flow of fluid across the valve. The curvature of the side wall and the geometry of the sidewall and the housing can be tailored to bias the valve element to open at different pressures during infusion and aspiration. The side wall can also include an extended portion that can function as a suture wing for securing the port within a port pocket.
1. A method of implanting a port and delivering treatment therethrough, the method comprising:
implanting a port comprising a rigid housing having an opening and an outlet;
the port having an elastomeric septum disposed within the opening to fluidly seal the opening, the septum comprising a top wall and a side wall extending from the top wall, wherein the side wall comprises a valve element having at least one slit adapted to permit fluid flow therethrough when acted upon by a threshold pressure, and wherein the top wall, side wall and valve element are of unitary construction;
accessing the port with a needle; and
infusing fluid through the needle and into the port.
2. The method of claim 1 , the step of accessing the port with a needle including piercing the septum.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the infusion of fluid at a sufficient threshold causes the valve to deform so fluid can flow across the valve.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein a curvature of the side wall is such that the valve is biased so that the pressure threshold is lower for infusion than for aspiration.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the septum includes a skirt portion adapted to be sutured to a patient.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the septum further includes at least one foot adapted to be sutured to a patient.
