Abstract

A multicolor electronic display is based on an array of luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals. Nanocrystals which emit tight of different colors are grouped into pixels. The nanocrystals are optically pumped to produce a multicolor display. Different sized nanocrystals are used to produce the different colors. A variety of pixel addressing systems can be used.

Claims (23)

1. A color display apparatus comprising:

an optical pumping source comprising one or more blue LED's; and

a polymer layer comprising red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals, said red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals emitting light in response to exposure to light from said optical pumping source;

wherein said layer comprising red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals is positioned adjacent to and in contact with said optical pumping source.

2. The color display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cores of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise CdSe.

3. The color display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cores of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise InP.

4. The color display apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the shells of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise CdS.

5. The color display apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the nanocrystals of said polymer layer consist of red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals.

6. The color display apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the cores of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise CdSe.

7. The color display apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the cores of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise InP.

8. The color display apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the shells of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise CdS.

9. A color display apparatus comprising:

an optical pumping source; and

a polymer layer comprising red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals, said red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals emitting light in response to exposure to light from said optical pumping source;

wherein said layer of red core/shell nanocrystals and green core/shell nanocrystals is positioned adjacent to and in contact with said optical pumping source, and

wherein said color display apparatus is configured to display dynamic color images.

10. The color display apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the cores of said red core/shell nanocrystals and said green core/shell nanocrystals comprise CdSe.

11. The color display apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the cores of said red core-shell nanocrystals and said green core-shell nanocrystals comprise InP.

12. The color display apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the shells of said red core-shell nanocrystals and said green core-shell nanocrystals comprise CdS.

13. The color display apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the nanocrystals of said polymer layer consist of red core-shell nanocrystals and green core-shell nanocrystals.

14. The color display apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the cores of said red core-shell nanocrystals and said green core-shell nanocrystals comprise CdSe.

15. The color display apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the cores of said red core-shell nanocrystals and said green core-shell nanocrystals comprise InP.

16. The color display apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the shells of said red core-shell nanocrystals and said green core-shell nanocrystals comprise CdS.
