Abstract

A reduced pressure treatment system includes a liquid-collection canister for collecting liquid from a tissue site to which reduced pressure treatment is applied. The canister includes a first space configured to collect the liquid from the tissue site and a filter having a frame and a non-planar filter element. The filter defines a second space within the canister separated from the first space by the filter element. The filter element substantially prevents liquid from passing from the first space into the second space. The filter element substantially allows gaseous communication between the first space and the second space when the second space is exposed to a reduced pressure.

Claims (27)

1. A liquid-collection canister for collecting liquid from a tissue site to which reduced pressure treatment is applied, the canister comprising:

a first space configured to collect the liquid from the tissue site;

a second space configured to receive a reduced pressure; and

a frame having a base at one end and a non-planar sidewall having a plurality of openings each covered by a filter element, at least two of the filter elements disposed between the first space and the second space in different planes, the filter element substantially preventing liquid from passing from the first space into the second space, and substantially allowing gaseous communication between the first space and the second space when the second space is exposed to a reduced pressure.

2. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall of the frame is conically shaped.

3. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein:

the frame is conically shaped and includes an apex;

the canister includes at least one substantially planar wall; and

the base of the frame is positioned on the substantially planar wall and the apex extends toward an opposite wall of the canister.

4. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the sidewalls of the frame are cylindrically-shaped.

5. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the frame is positioned within the canister such that, in any particular orientation of the canister, at least one of the filter elements is not parallel to a liquid plane associated with a surface of the liquid in the first space.

6. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the frame is positioned within the canister such that, for any particular orientation of the canister, the filter elements continue to permit gaseous communication between the first space and the second space when half or more of the first space is occupied by the liquid.

7. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 further comprising:

a canister inlet associated with the first space; and

a canister outlet associated with the second space.

8. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein:

the frame is conically shaped and includes an apex opposite the base;

the base of the frame is disposed on one wall of the canister; and

the apex extends toward an opposite wall of the canister.

9. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein:

the frame is cylindrically shaped and includes an opposite base;

the base of the frame is positioned on one wall of the canister; and

the opposite base extends toward an opposite wall of the canister.

10. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the filter elements covering the openings in the non-planar sidewall are substantially planar.

11. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the filter elements covering the openings in the non-planar sidewall are formed from a single sheet.

12. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the frame is positioned within the canister such that, in any particular orientation of the canister, at least one of the filter elements is not submerged below a liquid plane associated with a surface of the liquid in the first space.

13. The liquid-collection canister of claim 1 , wherein the frame is positioned within the canister such that, for any particular orientation of the canister, at least one of the filter elements continues to permit gaseous communication between the first space and the second space when most of the first space is occupied by the liquid.
