Abstract

A shock absorber includes a gas spring cylinder containing a piston moveable between an extended position and a compressed position within the gas spring cylinder. A mechanical actuator is arranged whereby a bleed port is automatically closed when the gas spring is compressed to a predetermined position corresponding to a desired sag setting. In one embodiment, the position corresponds to a predetermined sag setting whereby the gas spring is partially compressed. In another embodiment, a proper sag setting is determined through the use of a processor and sensor that in one instance measure a position of shock absorber components to dictate a proper sag setting and in another instance calculate a pressure corresponding to a preferred sag setting.

Claims (11)

1. A shock absorber for a vehicle, wherein said shock absorber comprises a gas spring moveable between extended and compressed positions, said shock absorber comprising:

a first member that is a gas spring housing;

a second member telescopically movable relative to said first member, wherein said second member is a damper body;

a trigger, said trigger located on one of said first member and said second member and operable when said first and said second member are in a predetermined position relative to each other;

a valve operated by said trigger, wherein said valve is initially open and is subsequently closed by said trigger,

wherein said valve is a bleed valve for bleeding compressed air from said shock absorber as said first member and said second member move telescopically from said extended and said compressed positions, and wherein said bleed valve utilizes a standard Schrader type valve in conjunction with a lever arm that holds a valve stem of said Schrader type valve in a down, hence open, position until such time that said lever arm is levered off of said valve stem by an encounter with a shoulder of a gas spring body;

a pump for adding compressed air to said gas spring at a first location and for providing compressed air to said bleed valve at a second location; and

a first lock out member and a second lock out member for preventing operation of said bleed valve.

2. The shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein said lever arm is biased by one of a helical and torsion spring toward said valve stem, thus toward holding said valve in an open position to allow bleed pressure to flow from a hose and through said valve.

3. The shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein said first lock out member is a mode valve.

4. The shock absorber of claim 1 , wherein said second lock out member is a retention member preventing extension of said trigger and operation of said bleed valve.
