Golf club head with molded cavity structure
View Patent ↗A golf club head includes a strike face, a crown, and a sole, and is formed from a forward section and a body section that are coupled together. The forward section includes the strike face, and the body section includes an upper shell defining a portion of the crown, a lower shell defining a portion of the sole, and an internal wall extending between the upper shell and the lower shell. The internal wall is molded from a polymeric material and is integrally formed with one of the upper shell and the lower shell. At least one of the upper shell and the lower shell defines an opening that is in communication with a cavity provided between the upper shell and the lower shell and at least partially defined by the internal wall.
1. A golf club head having a strike face, a crown, and a sole, the golf club head comprising:
a forward section including the strike face;
a body section coupled with the forward section, the body section including an upper shell that defines a portion of the crown, a lower shell that defines a portion of the sole, and an internal wall that extends from the upper shell to the lower shell;
wherein the internal wall is integrally molded with at least one of the upper shell or the lower shell and is formed from a polymeric material;
wherein at least one of the upper shell and the lower shell defines an opening that is in communication with a cavity extending between the upper shell and the lower shell; and
wherein the cavity is at least partially defined by the internal wall
wherein the internal wall is one or more internal walls, the opening is one or more openings, and the cavity is two or more cavities;
wherein each of the two or more cavities is in communication with a respective one of the one or more openings; and
wherein the number of cavities is greater than the number of openings.
2. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the internal wall is adhered to the lower shell.
3. The golf club head of claim 2 , wherein the internal wall defines a receiving portion;
wherein the lower shell includes a flange extending from the sole; and
wherein the flange is adhered within the receiving portion of the internal wall.
4. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the lower shell is formed from a metallic material.
5. The golf club head of claim 4 , wherein the forward section is formed from a metallic material; and
wherein the lower shell is integrally formed with the forward section.
6. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the lower shell is formed from the polymeric material.
7. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the internal wall at least partially defines a closed cavity between the internal wall and the forward section.
8. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the molded polymeric material is a filled thermoplastic material having a plurality of discontinuous embedded fibers.
9. The golf club head of claim 1 , wherein the opening is a first opening and is defined by the upper shell;
wherein the lower shell defines a second opening that is in communication with a second cavity extending between the upper shell and the lower shell; and
wherein the second cavity is partially defined by the internal wall.
