Abstract

An adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method and system are described that continuously looks for any obstruction between a driver and a widget displayed within the instrument panel display of the vehicle and, upon detection of an obstruction, will move the widget to a new, unobstructed, location.

Claims (39)

1. An adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method performed by a processing system within a vehicle having an instrument panel display that displays digital representations of gauges, using widgets, in lieu of physical gauges, the method comprising:

detecting, using at least one sensor associated with the vehicle instrument display, a location and view direction of a driver's eyes;

continuously sensing, using the at least one sensor, for presence of an obstruction between the driver's eyes and any widget displayed within the instrument panel display for greater than a specified time amount, wherein each of the widgets has an associated importance value that establishes a relative priority relationship among widgets that can be displayed within the instrument panel display;

when an obstruction is sensed, using the at least one sensor, between the driver's eyes and a widget displayed within the instrument panel display, then, based upon a result of the sensing, using the at least one processor, examining an importance value associated with the widget relative to importance values associated with other widgets present in the instrument panel display; and

if the importance value associated with the widget indicates that the widget is more important than at least one unobstructed widget displayed within the instrument panel display, using the at least one processor, automatically moving the widget in the instrument panel display to a new unobstructed location.

2. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, using the at least one processor, that the new unobstructed location is only in a secondary display.

3. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 1 , wherein in connection with the automatically moving the widget in the instrument panel display to a new unobstructed location the method further comprises one of:

(i) moving,

(ii) modifying, or

(iii) moving and modifying,

at least the at least one unobstructed widget in order to make room for the widget in an unobstructed part of the instrument panel display.

4. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 1 , further comprising:

following the automatically moving the widget, determining, using the at least one sensor, that the previously sensed obstruction has not been present for at least a predetermined length of time; and

automatically reverting all widgets to their positions and sizes in the instrument panel display that immediately preceded the sensing of the obstruction.

5. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, using the sensors that there are no unobstructed areas of the instrument panel display to which the widget can be moved.

6. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 5 , wherein, following the determining that there are no unobstructed areas of the instrument panel display to which the widget can be moved when a secondary display is available, the method comprises:

determining, using the at least one processor, that a secondary display is available that can be used to display the widget; and

temporarily moving the widget to the secondary display using the at least one processor.

7. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically moving the widget in the instrument panel display to the new unobstructed location comprises:

shrinking the widget, using the at least one processor, to fit within the new unobstructed location.

8. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 7 further comprising:

determining, using the at least one processor, that at least one lower importance widget was removed from the instrument panel display.

9. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display method of claim 8 wherein, if a secondary display is present and accessible to the at least one processor, the method comprises:

determining, using the at least one processor, whether the at least one lower importance widget that was removed can be moved to the secondary display; and

if the at least one lower importance widget that was removed can be moved to the secondary display, then moving the at least one lower importance widget to the secondary display, using the at least one processor.

10. An adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system located within a vehicle, the system comprising:

at least one processor within the vehicle;

an instrument panel display within the vehicle and coupled to the at least one processor, the instrument panel display interoperating with the at least one processor to display widgets as digital representations of gauges within the instrument panel display;

multiple sensors within the vehicle, associated with the instrument panel display, and oriented in a direction towards a driver of the vehicle;

the multiple sensors interoperating with the at least one processor to detect when any obstruction is interposed between at least one widget displayed in the instrument panel display and the driver's eyes and determine, based upon the sensors and a position of the driver's eyes, whether there is a location within the instrument panel display that is an unobstructed location such that the at least one widget can be moved to the unobstructed location within the instrument panel display and, if the at least one widget can be moved to the unobstructed location within the instrument panel display, the at least one processor will temporarily move the at least one widget to the unobstructed location within the instrument panel display.

11. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the multiple sensors comprises a camera.

12. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the multiple sensors comprises an infrared sensor.

13. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system of claim 10 further comprising:

a secondary display, accessible to the at least one processor, that can receive a widget for display thereon.

14. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system of claim 10 further comprising:

non-volatile storage, accessible to the at least one processor, having storage locations associated with the widgets and defined therein to hold at least one importance value for each widget that can be displayed in the instrument panel display.

15. The adaptive, automatically-reconfigurable, vehicle instrument display system of claim 14 , wherein the storage locations in the non-volatile storage are further defined to hold at least one prior importance value for each widget that can be displayed in the instrument panel display.
