Abstract

A suction device is shown and described. The suction device includes a body, an input port configured to receive a flow of matter, a suction port, and a suction lumen that couples the suction port to the input port. In some embodiments the suction device is configured to couple with a surgical instrument for use in a surgical procedure.

Claims (17)

1. An elongate surgical device configured to couple with an electrosurgical instrument, provide suction of material from a surgical field, and enhance the suctioning of surgical smoke from the surgical field, the elongate surgical device comprising:

a retainer configured to couple the elongate surgical device with the electrosurgical instrument;

an input port configured to receive a suction flow from the surgical field and positioned at a distal end of the elongate surgical device;

a plurality of intake ports configured to receive surgical smoke from the surgical field and positioned proximally to the input port on a surface of the elongate surgical device;

a longitudinal channel having:

a first flared segment into which the input port opens so that the first flared segment receives the suction flow from the input port when suction is generated within the longitudinal channel, the first flared segment having its smallest diameter at a location where the first flared segment has the least amount of outward flaring;

a second flared segment into which a suction source opens so that the suction source generates suction within the longitudinal channel, the second flared segment having its smallest diameter at a location where the second flared segment has the least amount of outward flaring; and

a narrow segment positioned in between the first flared segment and the second flared segment, wherein a diameter of the narrow segment is less than or equal to the smallest diameter of the first flared segment and the smallest diameter of the second flared segment, and into which wherein the plurality of intake ports open into the narrow segment so that when suction is generated within the longitudinal channel by the suction source, a Venturi effect is generated at the narrow segment so that the Venturi effect enhances a flow of the surgical smoke into the longitudinal channel.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein longitudinal channel comprises a flexible membrane.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the body is configured so that the electrosurgical instrument is operable when coupled with the body.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the body is configured to be operable simultaneously with the electrosurgical instrument when coupled with the electrosurgical instrument.

5. The device of claim 1 , comprising a filter configured to filter the surgical smoke.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein a width of the narrow segment is adjustable.

7. The device of claim 1 , comprising a positive pressure port configured to receive a positive pressure gas flow so that the positive pressure gas flow generates an area of low pressure within the longitudinal channel through the Coanda effect, and wherein the area of low pressure generates suction.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein a suction control is configured to modify the flow of the pressurized gas.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of intake ports are positioned circumferentially about an outer surface of the narrow segment.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein when coupled with elongate surgical device, the electrosurgical instrument is at least partially positioned within the longitudinal channel.
