Extruded support members for facilitating access to a vehicle and related methods
View Patent ↗Support devices and their components are disclosed, including an optional lighting element mountable on the support device for emitting light. The support device facilitates access to a vehicle and includes an elongate extruded support member, brackets for mounting the elongate extruded support member to a vehicle, and a step affixed to the elongate extruded support member. A mount can be provided and coupled to the lighting element and to the step to secure the lighting element to the step when the lighting element is incorporated.
1. A support device for facilitating access to vehicles comprising:
an elongate extruded support member comprising a body with a length, two open ends, and a hollow interior; said body having a non-circular cross-sectional profile with an upper landing surface and an angled side support surface extending therefrom;
brackets coupled to the elongate extruded support member for mounting the elongate extruded support member to a vehicle;
a step affixed to the elongate extruded support member, wherein the step comprises a landing surface comprising holes allowing light to pass therethrough, a first end and a second end;
a first attachment flange attached to the first end of the step and a second attachment flange attached to the second end of the step, each of said first and second attachment flanges comprising an end edge welded to the angled side support surface of the elongate extruded support member; and
wherein the step comprises a underside cavity and an open channel opposite the landing surface.
2. The support device of claim 1 , wherein the first attachment flange and the second attachment flange are generally flat and the generally flat surface of the first attachment flange contacting the first end and the generally flat surface of the second attachment flange contacting the second end.
3. The support device of claim 1 , wherein the brackets are repositionable along the length of the elongate extruded support member.
4. The support device of claim 1 , wherein the step is a first step and further comprising a second step affixed to the elongate extruded support member and spaced from the first step.
5. The support device of claim 1 , further comprising interior ribs located in the hollow interior of the elongate extruded support member.
6. The support device of claim 5 , further comprising an end cap secured to at least one of the interior ribs.
7. The support device of claim 1 , further comprising one or more cut-outs formed through the first attachment flange.
8. The support device of claim 1 , wherein the brackets each comprises a base and a mounting flange extending from the base, said mounting flange comprising one or more holes.
9. A support device for facilitating access to vehicles comprising:
an elongate extruded support member comprising a body with a length, two open ends, and a hollow interior; said body having a non-circular cross-sectional profile with an upper landing surface and an angled side support surface extending therefrom;
brackets coupled to the elongate extruded support member for mounting the elongate extruded support member to a vehicle;
a step extending from the elongate extruded support member, wherein the step comprises a landing surface comprising holes allowing light to pass therethrough, a underside cavity, and an open channel opposite the landing surface;
a first attachment flange attached to a first end of the step and a second attachment flange attached to a second end of the step, said first and second attachment flanges are generally flat and the generally flat surface of the first attachment flange contacting the first end and the generally flat surface of the second attachment flange contacting the second end; and
an end cap attached to each of the open ends of the elongate extruded support member.
10. The support device of claim 9 , wherein the body of the elongate extruded support member has a pseudo oval shape or a pseudo inverse trapezoid profile with the angled side support surface extending from a side.
11. The support device of claim 9 , wherein the first and second attachment flanges are welded to the angled side support surface.
12. The support device of claim 9 , wherein first and second attachment flanges are repositionable on the elongate extruded support member.
13. The support device of claim 9 , further comprising one or more cut-outs formed through the first attachment flange.
14. The support device of claim 13 , further comprising one or more cut-outs formed through the second attachment flange.
15. The support device of claim 9 , wherein the end caps are secured to the open ends by friction, by fasteners, or combinations thereof.
16. The support device of claim 9 , wherein the step is a first step and further comprising a second step affixed to the elongate extruded support member and spaced from the first step.
