Abstract

A technique for wireless communication is provided. According to an example embodiment, the technique comprises selectively operating a wireless transceiver in an apparatus in one of a first state and a second state in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus, wherein the first state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable and connectable by other devices and wherein the second state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable but not connectable by other devices, determining whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus, and operating the wireless transceiver in the first state in response to the determination being affirmative and otherwise operating the wireless transceiver in the second state.

Claims (50)

1 . An apparatus for wireless communication comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one memory including computer program code;

the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to:

selectively cause a wireless transceiver in the apparatus to operate in one of a first state and a second state in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus, wherein

said first state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable and connectable by other devices, and

said second state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable but not connectable by other devices,

determine whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus, and

cause the wireless transceiver to operate in said first state in response to said determination being affirmative and otherwise cause the wireless transceiver to operate in said second state.

2 . An apparatus according claim 1 , wherein said determination comprises determining whether a power reserve available in a power source accessible by the apparatus exceeds a predefined threshold.

3 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said determination comprises determining whether the apparatus is in receipt of operating power from an external power supply.

4 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to transmit, when operating in one of the first and second states, one or more advertising messages that comprise an indication of the current operational state of the wireless transceiver.

5 . An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the apparatus at least to:

adjust transmission interval of said one or more advertising messages in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus; and

adjust transmission power level of said one or more advertising messages in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus.

6 . An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein said one or more advertising messages comprise advertising packets in accordance with the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, BLE, wherein

advertising packets transmitted during operation in the first state comprise BLE ADV_IND advertising packets, and

advertising packets transmitted during operation in the second state comprise BLE ADV_NONCONN_IND advertising packets.

7 . An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein advertising messages transmitted during operation at least in one of the first state and second state comprise a limited subset of information available in the apparatus.

8 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to establish, in response to receiving a connection request when operating in said first state, a wireless connection with a source of said connection request, and wherein the at least one memory and the computer program code are configured to, with the at least one processor, cause the wireless transceiver to perform at least one of the following:

transmit information available in the apparatus to said source over the established wireless connection, and

receive information related to configuration of the apparatus from said source over the established wireless connection.

9 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein

the apparatus further comprises one or more sensors for measuring values of respective one or more environmental parameters; and

information available in the apparatus comprises one or more measured values of at least one of said one or more environmental parameters.

10 . A method comprising:

selectively operating a wireless transceiver in an apparatus in one of a first state and a second state in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus, wherein

said first state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable and connectable by other devices, and

said second state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable but not connectable by other devices,

determining whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus, and

operating the wireless transceiver in said first state in response to said determination being affirmative and otherwise operating the wireless transceiver in said second state.

11 . A method according claim 10 , wherein said determination comprises determining whether a power reserve available in a power source accessible by the apparatus exceeds a predefined threshold.

12 . A method according to claim 10 , wherein said determination comprises determining whether the apparatus is in receipt of operating power from an external power supply.

13 . A method according to claim 10 , further comprising transmitting, by the wireless transceiver when operating in one of the first and second states, one or more advertising messages that comprise an indication of the current operational state of the wireless transceiver.

14 . A method according to claim 13 , further comprising adjusting transmission interval of said one or more advertising messages in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus.

15 . A method according to claim 13 , further comprising adjusting transmission power level of said one or more advertising messages in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for the apparatus.

16 . A method according to claim 13 , wherein said one or more advertising messages comprise advertising packets in accordance with the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol, BLE, wherein

advertising packets transmitted during operation in the first state comprise BLE ADV_IND advertising packets, and

advertising packets transmitted during operation in the second state comprise BLE ADV_NONCONN_IND advertising packets.

17 . A method according to claim 10 , further comprising measuring values of respective one or more environmental parameters, wherein information available in the apparatus comprises one or more measured values of at least one of said one or more environmental parameters.

18 . A computer program product comprising computer executable program code recorded on a computer readable, non-transitory storage medium, the computer executable program code comprising:

code for selectively causing a wireless transceiver to operate in one of a first state and a second state in dependence of sufficiency of operating power available for an apparatus, wherein

said first state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable and connectable by other devices, and

said second state is an operational state where the wireless transceiver is discoverable but not connectable by other devices,

code for determining whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus, and

code for causing the wireless transceiver to operate in said first state in response to said determination being affirmative and otherwise cause the wireless transceiver to operate in said second state.

19 . A computer program product according to claim 18 , wherein said code for determining whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus comprises:

code for determining whether a power reserve available in a power source accessible by the apparatus exceeds a predefined threshold.

20 . A computer program product according to claim 18 , wherein said code for determining whether sufficient operating power is available for the apparatus comprises:

code for determining whether the apparatus is in receipt of operating power from an external power supply.
