Abstract

An apparatus may comprise a radio-frequency (RF) transceiver and a message aggregation module arranged to intercept multiple messages from one or more mobile data applications during an idle mode of a device, one or more of the multiple messages operable to trigger a transition of the device from the idle mode to a connected mode by causing a radio resource control message to be sent from the device to a radio access network, the message aggregation module to store the multiple messages in a buffer associated with the one or more mobile data applications in order to maintain the device in the idle mode, and schedule for transmission by the RF transceiver the stored messages at a defined time instance based on a delay tolerance for the one or more mobile data applications when the device is in the connected mode. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , the one or more messages of the mobile data application to include at least one status update message.

7. A system, comprising:

the apparatus of claim 1 ;

at least one radio frequency (RF) transceiver; and

at least one RF antenna.

8. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions that, in response to being executed at a packet data network (PDN) node, cause the PDN node to:

identify a time interval between a first transmission time and a second transmission time, the first and second transmission times to comprise times for transmission of messages of a first message type;

aggregate multiple messages of the first message type during the time interval;

delay transmission of the multiple messages of the first message type until the second transmission time to reduce overhead associated with transmission of the multiple messages of the first message type; and

forward at least one data packet for transmission during the time interval between the first and second transmission times.

9. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , a duration of the time interval between the first and second transmission times to match an aggregation period for messages of the first message type, the aggregation period to be selected based on a delay tolerance associated with the first message type.

10. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , comprising instructions that, in response to being executed at the PDN node, cause the PDN node to:

aggregate one or more messages of a second message type with the multiple messages of the first message type; and

forward the aggregated messages of the first and second message types for transmission at the second transmission time.

11. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , the multiple messages of the first message type to include, for each of two or more user equipments (UEs), at least one respective message to be transmitted to that UE at the second transmission time.

12. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , comprising instructions that, in response to being executed at the PDN node, cause the PDN node to forward the aggregated messages of the first message type for transmission by sending a message containing the aggregated messages of the first message type to an evolved node B (eNB).

13. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , the first message type to comprise a heartbeat message type, a keep-alive message type, or a status update message type.

14. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising a set of instructions that, in response to being executed at user equipment (UE), cause the UE to:

identify a time interval for aggregating messages of a first message type;

aggregate multiple messages of the first message type during the time interval;

schedule transmission of the aggregated messages of the first message type for a time instance subsequent to an end of the time interval;

transmit at least one data packet during the time interval; and

transmit the aggregated messages of the first message type at the time instance.

15. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , comprising instructions that, in response to being executed at the UE, cause the UE to identify the time interval based on an aggregation period for messages of the first message type.

16. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , the aggregation period for messages of the first message type to be selected based on a delay tolerance associated with the first message type.

17. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , comprising instructions that, in response to being executed at the UE, cause the UE to transmit a message containing the aggregated messages of the first message type following the time interval.

18. The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 17 , comprising instructions that, in response to being executed at the UE, cause the UE to include one or more aggregated messages of a second message type within the message containing the aggregated messages of the first message type.
