Abstract

In accordance with an embodiment, a method of operating a radar system includes receiving radar configuration data from a host, and receiving a start command from the host after receiving the radar configuration data. The radar configuration data includes chirp parameters and frame sequence settings. After receiving the start command, configuring a frequency generation circuit is configured with the chirp parameters and radar frames are triggered at a preselected rate.

Claims (46)

1. A method of operating a radar system, the method comprising:

receiving, by a controller, radar configuration data from a host via a data communication interface, the radar configuration data comprising chirp parameters defining a frequency ramp;

setting up a frame sequencer of the controller with the chirp parameters defining the frequency ramp;

receiving, by the controller, a start command from the host via the data communication interface after receiving the radar configuration data; and

after receiving the start command,

triggering, by the frame sequencer, radar frames at a preselected frame rate,

upon triggering each radar frame, triggering, by the frame sequencer, a chirp generator of the controller to generate the frequency ramp according to the chirp parameters,

receiving samples from an analog-to-digital converter coupled to a receiver of the radar system,

sending, by the frame sequencer, the received samples to the host via the data communication interface,

receiving, by the controller, a stop command from the host via the data communication interface after receiving the start command, and

stopping triggering the radar frames upon receipt of the stop command.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising powering down RF circuitry of the radar system upon receipt of the stop command.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising powering up RF circuitry of the radar system upon receipt of the start command.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein triggering radar frames comprises:

triggering, by the frame sequencer, a frequency generation circuit to generate the frequency ramp based on the chirp parameters;

receiving samples from an analog-to-digital converter coupled to a receiver of the radar system; and

sending, by the frame sequencer, the received samples to the host.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein triggering radar frames further comprises:

enabling, by the frame sequencer, receive antennas and transmit antennas of the radar system at beginning of the radar frame; and

disabling, by the frame sequencer, the receive antennas and the transmit antennas of the radar system at end of the radar frame.

6. A radar system comprising:

a processor circuit configured to be coupled to radar hardware; and

a non-transitory computer readable medium coupled to the processor circuit, the non-transitory computer readable medium comprising an executable program thereon, wherein the executable program instructs the processor circuit to perform the steps of:

receiving, by the processor circuit, radar configuration data from a host via a data communication interface, the radar configuration data comprising chirp parameters defining a frequency ramp;

setting up a frame sequencer of the processor circuit with the chirp parameters defining the frequency ramp;

receiving, by the processor circuit, a start command from the host via the data communication interface after receiving the radar configuration data; and

after receiving the start command,

triggering, by the frame sequencer, radar frames at a preselected frame rate,

upon triggering each radar frame, triggering, by the frame sequencer, a chirp generator of the processor circuit to generate the frequency ramp according to the chirp parameters,

receiving samples from an analog-to-digital converter coupled to a receiver of the radar system,

sending, by the frame sequencer, the received samples to the host via the data communication interface,

receiving, by the processor circuit, a stop command from the host via the data communication interface after receiving the start command, and

stopping triggering the radar frames upon receipt of the stop command.

7. The radar system of claim 6 , wherein the executable program instructs the processor circuit to perform the further step of powering down RF circuitry of the radar system upon receipt of the stop command.

8. The radar system of claim 6 , wherein the executable program instructs the processor circuit to perform the further step of powering up RF circuitry of the radar system upon receipt of the start command.

9. The radar system of claim 6 , wherein the executable program instruction step of triggering the radar frames comprises the steps of:

triggering a frequency generation circuit to generate the frequency ramp based on the chirp parameters;

receiving samples from an analog-to-digital converter coupled to a receiver of the radar system; and

sending the received samples to the host.

10. The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the executable program instruction step of triggering the radar frames further comprises the steps of:

enabling receive antennas and transmit antennas of the radar system at beginning of the radar frame; and

disabling the receive antennas and the transmit antennas of the radar system at end of the radar frame.

11. The radar system of claim 6 , further comprising the radar hardware.

12. The radar system of claim 11 , wherein the radar hardware comprises:

RF circuitry; and

a frequency generation circuit.
