Abstract

Catheters for percutaneous applications are disclosed. The catheter according to example embodiments may comprise a substantially straight section, an anchoring section positioned proximal to the substantially straight section. The anchoring section can have a curvature for providing longitudinal traction with a tissue to anchor the catheter to the tissue and a pathway extending through the catheter for transporting fluids. The pathway may comprise a first section and a second section in fluid communication with each other, where the first section extends through the length of the straight section, and the second section extends through the anchoring section and has a curvature which mimics the curvature of the anchoring section.

Claims (23)

1. A catheter comprising:

an elongated substantially straight section configured to pierce through tissues and be advanced into and situated across multiple layers of tissue;

a rigid anchoring section positioned proximal to the elongated substantially straight section for advancement into the tissue following the elongated substantially straight section, the rigid anchoring section having a plurality of turns configured to allow tissues to be lodged between each of the plurality of turns for providing longitudinal traction with the tissue within which the anchoring section is positioned to anchor the catheter to the tissue; and

a pathway extending through the catheter for transporting fluids or to serve as a passageway for instruments, the pathway comprising a first section and a second section in fluid communication with each other,

wherein the first section extends through the length of the elongated substantially straight section and the second section extends through the rigid anchoring section and has a curvature which mimics the curvature of the rigid anchoring section,

wherein the elongated substantially straight section is configured to be advanced into the tissue in a substantially linear direction to create a linear pathway upon complete insertion and the rigid anchoring section is configured to be inserted into the tissue in a rotational direction to create a non-linear pathway corresponding to the plurality of turns upon complete insertion.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the elongated substantially straight section further comprises a pointed tip for piercing through tissues.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the anchoring section is a helical structure with the plurality of turns.

4. The catheter of claim 1 further comprising a hub section positioned proximal to the anchoring section for providing coupling with a medical instrument, wherein the hub is substantially aligned with the elongated substantially straight section.

5. A catheter comprising:

an elongated substantially straight section configured to pierce and be advanced into and situated across multiple layers of tissue;

a helical structure positioned proximal to the elongated substantially straight section, the helical structure having sufficient strength to be rotated into the tissue following the elongated substantially straight section and having a plurality of turns configured to allow tissues to be lodged between each of the plurality of turns for providing longitudinal traction with the tissue within which the helical structure is positioned to anchor the catheter to the tissue; and

a pathway extending through the catheter for transporting fluids or to serve as a passageway for instruments, wherein a portion of the pathway extending through the helical structure follows the plurality of turns of the helical structure,

wherein the elongated substantially straight section is configured to be advanced into the tissue in a substantially linear direction to create a linear pathway upon complete insertion and the rigid anchoring section is configured to be inserted into the tissue in a rotational direction to create a helical pathway upon complete insertion.

6. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the helical structure resists straightening under traction forces.

7. The catheter of claim 6 , wherein the helical structure is sufficiently flexible to be straightened upon advancement of a rigid needle therethrough.

8. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of turns are spaced apart from one another.

9. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein a pitch between the plurality of turns is about two millimeters to about four millimeters.

10. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein a diameter of the helical structure is larger than a diameter of the elongated substantially straight section.

11. The catheter of claim 10 , wherein the diameter of the helical structure is about two times to about six times the diameter of the elongated substantially straight section.

12. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the elongated substantially straight section further comprises a pointed tip for piercing through tissues.

13. The catheter of claim 5 further comprising a hub section positioned proximal to the anchoring section for providing coupling with a medical instrument, wherein the hub is substantially aligned with the elongated substantially straight section.

14. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the helical structure has a substantially uninterrupted outer surface such that a portion of the pathway extending through the helical structure is fully contained inside the helical structure.
