Abstract

Communication devices are disclosed. In an example embodiment, a communication device may include a communication module including an illumination source and a body element. The body element may be configured to allow illumination generated by the illumination source to propagate within and illuminate at least a portion of an outer surface of the body element.

Claims (25)

1. An optoelectronic communication device comprising:

a first optoelectronic module including:

a first illumination source;

a first body element configured to allow illumination generated by the first illumination source to propagate within and illuminate at least a portion of an outer surface of the first body element, and

a sensor configured to detect a physical input applied at the first optoelectronic module;

the first optoelectronic module configured to be optically coupled to an optical cable configured to transmit optical signals between the first optoelectronic module and a second optoelectronic module.

2. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 1 , wherein the first body element is a first protrusion configured to enable a person to grip and remove the first optoelectronic module from a first retaining connection.

3. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is configured to detect the physical input including a force applied to the first optoelectronic module.

4. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force applied to the first optoelectronic module is substantially parallel to a host device connected to the first optoelectronic module.

5. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , further comprising the second optoelectronic module including:

a second illumination source, and

a second body element configured to allow illumination generated by the second illumination source to propagate within and illuminate at least a portion of an outer surface of the second body element,

wherein the first optoelectronic module is configured to transmit a command to the second optoelectronic module via the cable based at least in part on the sensor detecting the physical input at the first optoelectronic module, and

wherein the second optoelectronic module is configured to turn on the second illumination source based at least in part on the command.

6. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 5 , wherein the second body element is a second protrusion configured to enable a person to grip and remove the second optoelectronic module from a second retaining connection.

7. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 5 , wherein the command is transmitted via an out-of-band signal.

8. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 5 , wherein the first optoelectronic module is configured to transmit the command to the second optoelectronic module based at least in part on the physical input detected by the sensor.

9. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 5 , wherein the first illumination source is capable of producing a plurality of colors or flashing on and off at a plurality of rates to indicate a diagnostic state or a physical address label of the second optoelectronic module.

10. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force applied to the first optoelectronic module is toward or away from a host device connected to the first optoelectronic module.

11. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force is a pushing force applied to the first optoelectronic module such that the first optoelectronic module is urged against a retention latch.

12. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force applied to the first optoelectronic module is sufficient to overcome a biasing device urging the first optoelectronic module toward a front of a host device.

13. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force is a pulling force applied to the first optoelectronic module away from a host device.

14. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 13 , wherein the pulling force required to activate the sensor is less than a force required to remove the first optoelectronic module from a host device.

15. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 3 , wherein the force is applied to a handle or protrusion of the first optoelectronic module.

16. The optoelectronic communication device of claim 15 , wherein the force further includes a compressive force or a pinching force applied to a portion of the handle including the sensor.
