Abstract

A connection box for solar panels to enable the use of multiple types of passive and active covers for different functionalities in the junction box built into the panel to which the connection box is fixedly attached.

Claims (23)

1. A solar panel, comprising:

a plurality of photovoltaic cells arranged on a front side of the solar panel;

a junction box having a base fixedly attached to a back side of the solar panel;

wherein the base includes a plurality of contacts connected to sections of the photovoltaic cells; and

wherein each respective contact of the plurality of contacts has a connector receptacle configured to receive a respective connector of a cover of the junction box to form an electronic connection between the respective contact and a circuit in the cover.

2. The solar panel of claim 1 , further comprising:

the cover having a plurality of connectors corresponding to the plurality of contacts.

3. The solar panel of claim 1 , further comprising:

a receptacle holding a memory chip storing identification information of the solar panel.

4. The solar panel of claim 3 , wherein the base further includes a plurality of receptacles to receive snap-in tongues of the cover to lock the cover onto the base.

5. The solar panel of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the snap-in tongues have a pin that is mechanically coded for mating with one of the plurality of receptacles of the base for receiving the snap-in tongues of the cover.

6. The solar panel of claim 4 , wherein at least one latch for the snap-in tongues is configured to require a matching tool to open the latch.

7. The solar panel of claim 3 , wherein the base further includes second contacts connected to connectors for wires connecting the solar panel in a string of panels; and each respective contact of second contacts has a connector receptacle configured to receive a respective connector of the cover to form an electronic connection the circuit in the cover.

8. The solar panel of claim 3 , wherein the base has plastic receptacles holding the contacts in the base.

9. The solar panel of claim 3 , further comprising:

the memory chip programmed during a manufacturing process of the solar panel with a serial number of the solar panel and characteristics data of the solar panel.

10. The solar panel of claim 9 , wherein a controller installed in the cover is configured to read the memory chip during operation of the solar panel when the cover is attached to the base.

11. The solar panel of claim 10 , wherein if the controller does not recognize the solar panel from the data stored in the memory chip, the controller is configured to discontinue the operation of the solar panel.

12. The solar panel of claim 11 , wherein the controller is configured to recognize the solar panel from the data stored in the memory chip based on data stored in a central registry to help reduce theft of panels.

13. The solar panel of claim 3 , further comprising:

an electrically non-functional pin configured for mechanical coding.

14. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the base is capable of receiving covers and from connections with circuits having different function in the received covers, including a first cover having a passive module and a second cover having an active function module.

15. The solar panel of claim 1 , wherein the connector receptacle of the respective contact is configured to receive a connector having a zig-zag shaped blade.
