Abstract

In one aspect, the dual bevel needle can include a hollow tube having a proximal end, a distal end, a first lateral side, and a second lateral side opposite the first lateral side; a first needle point at the distal end of the hollow tube; a second point at the distal end of the hollow tube; a first bevel on each of the first lateral side and the second lateral side, the first bevel comprising a first bevel angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the tube; and a second bevel on each of the first lateral side and the second lateral side, the second bevel having a second bevel angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the tube, wherein the first and second bevels each form a portion of an ellipse, the ellipse having an inner cutting edge and terminating in the first and second needle points at the distal end of the tube, the second bevel angle being shallower than the first bevel angle, the second bevel being located adjacent the proximal end of the first bevel, and the inner cutting edge converging to a narrow heel.

Claims (27)

1. A method for manufacturing hollow needles, the method comprising the steps of:

a. stamping a needle design into a sheet of material, wherein the needle design comprises a row of a plurality of hollow needles to be formed and a carrier, wherein the needle design of each of the plurality of hollow needles comprises a plurality of needle tips and at least one narrow heel;

b. processing the stamped needle design, including sharpening the plurality of needle tips and the at least one narrow heel; and

c. rolling the stamped, processed needle design to form the row of hollow needles wherein each hollow needle comprises a plurality of sharp tips, and at least one sharp narrow heel and wherein each needle remains attached to the carrier.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the needle design of each of the plurality of hollow needles comprises at least three needle tips, and wherein each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles comprises at least three tips.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sharpening comprises etching.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sharpening comprises grinding.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sharpening comprises electropolishing.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a central lumen of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles, the central lumen having a diameter of less than about 1 mm.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a central lumen of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles, the central lumen having a diameter of less than about 0.8 mm.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the material comprises steel.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the material comprises plastic.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

d. forming a two dimensional array of hollow needles, the two dimensional array comprising a plurality of rows of hollow needles and carriers.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the two dimensional array comprises about 300 hollow needles.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

d. removing the carrier from the row of hollow needles.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

e. forming a plurality of rows of hollow needles into a two dimensional array of hollow needles.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms each hollow needle of the row of needles to be cylindrical.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles to be non-cylindrical.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a cross-section of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles to be square.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a cross-section of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles to be oval.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a cross-section of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles to be circular.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein rolling the stamped, processed needle design forms a cross-section of each hollow needle of the row of hollow needles to be a polygon.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one narrow heel comprises two heels.

21. The method of claim 6 , wherein a width of each narrow heel is less than 15% of the diameter of the central lumen.
