Abstract

The invention provides for modified proppants, comprising a proppant particle and a hydrogel coating, wherein the hydrogel coating localizes on the surface of the proppant particle to produce the modified proppant, methods of manufacturing such proppants and methods of use.

Claims (25)

1. A modified proppant, comprising a proppant particle substrate and a coating of a hydrogel-forming polymer, wherein the coating localizes on the surfaces of the proppant particle substrate to produce the modified proppant,

wherein the proppant particle substrate comprises graded sand, resin coated sand, bauxite, ceramic materials or glass materials,

wherein the coating comprises a hydrogel-forming polymer having a weight average molecular weight of ≧ about 1 million g/mol,

wherein the modified proppant is made by an invert emulsion coating technique in which the proppant particle substrate is combined with an invert emulsion in which the oil phase forms the continuous phase of the emulsion and the hydrogel-forming polymer in water forms the discontinuous, emulsified phase,

wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer forms a substantially continuous film on the surface of the proppant particle which is crosslinked,

wherein 1 gram of the modified proppant when mixed with water in a 20 ml glass vial and allowed to sit undisturbed for 30 minutes exhibits an expanded settled bed height which is about 3 (2.7/0.8) to about 28 (22.9/0.8) times greater than the settled bed height of an otherwise identical proppant not modified with a hydrogel coating, and

wherein the modified proppant substantially retains its expanded settled bed height after having been subjected to shear at a shear rate of about 550 s −1 for 20 minutes.

2. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the weight average molecular weight of the hydrogel-forming polymer is ≧ about 5 million g/mol.

3. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the proppant is free-flowing after being subjected to a relative humidity of between about 80%-90% for one hour at 25-35° C.

4. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the proppant is dry and free-flowing.

5. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel coating has been crosslinked by means of a covalent crosslinking agent.

6. The modified proppant of claim 5 , wherein the covalent crosslinking agent is selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, an anhydride, an aldehyde, a diisocyanate, a carbodiimide, divinyl groups and diallyl groups.

7. The modified proppant of claim 6 , wherein the covalent crosslinking agent is a diisocyanate.

8. The modified proppant of claim 5 , wherein the covalent crosslinking agent is introduced as a chemical modifier to the pre-formed hydrogel-forming polymer.

9. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer coating is applied by combining a proppant particle substrate with a liquid polymer formulation comprising the hydrogel-forming polymer, water and an organic carrier liquid followed by drying.

10. The modified proppant of claim 9 , wherein, in addition to the hydrogel-forming polymer, water and an organic carrier liquid, the liquid polymer formulation further comprises an alcohol.

11. The modified proppant of claim 10 , wherein the alcohol is at least one of ethanol, propanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerol.

12. The modified proppant of claim 11 , wherein the alcohol is at least one of ethylene glycol, propylene glycol and glycerol.

13. The modified proppant of claim 12 , wherein the alcohol is glycerol.

14. The modified proppant of claim 1 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyacrylamide, hydrolyzed polyacrylamide, copolymers of acrylamide with ethylenically unsaturated ionic comonomers, copolymers of acrylamide and acrylic acid salts, poly(acrylic acid) or salts thereof, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, guar gum, carboxymethyl guar, carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar gum, hydrophobically associating swellable emulsion polymers, and latex polymers.

15. The modified proppant of claim 14 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer is an acrylamide polymer.

16. The modified proppant of claim 14 , wherein the hydrogel-forming polymer is an anionic polyacrylamide.

17. The modified proppant of claim 1 , further comprising an anticaking agent selected from the group consisting of calcium silicate, calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, bentonite, diatomaceous earth, fumed silica, colloidal silica, microcrystalline cellulose and attapulgate.

18. A hydraulic fracturing formulation comprising water and the modified proppant of claim 1 .

19. A process for fracturing a geological formation penetrated by a well comprising pumping the hydraulic fracturing formulation of claim 18 down the well.
