Abstract

A drive apparatus is provided which comprising a ducting piece coupled to a drive comprises an air vent. The base of the ducting piece is open to receive exhaust gases from the drive and the ducting piece then diverts these gases horizontally. A system may be provided comprises a plurality of such apparatuses, with the ducting pieces coupled to one another to pass the gases along a horizontal pathway.

Claims (19)

1 . (canceled)

2 . The system of claim 4 , wherein both the first and second end faces of at least one of the plurality of drive apparatuses are partially open.

3 . The system of claim 4 , wherein both the first and second end faces of at least one of the plurality of drive apparatuses are fully open.

4 . A configurable drive-air duct system comprising a plurality of drive apparatuses, each of the plurality of the apparatuses comprising:

a ducting piece including a base face, a top face opposite the base face, and first and second end faces opposite to each other and adjacent to the base face, wherein the top face is closed and the base face is at least partially open, and wherein at least one of the first and second end faces is at least partially open; and

a drive comprising an air vent, the ducting piece click-fit coupled to the drive such that the at least partially open base face of the ducting piece is arranged to cover the air vent of the drive;

wherein at least one of the first and second end faces of each ducting piece is connected to a first or second end face of an adjacent ducting piece; and

wherein air is extracted from both ends of the air duct system.

5 . (canceled)

6 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising a blanking plate to restrict air flow in one direction.

7 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising a duct extension to remove heat from the system.

8 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising a fan arranged to encourage air flow through one or more ducting pieces.

9 . The system of claim 4 , further comprising a cabinet in which the plurality of drive apparatuses are mounted, wherein an airflow path formed at least in part by the ducting pieces extends to a hole in a wall of the cabinet.

10 . A drive system comprising:

a drive comprising an air vent; and

a backplane coupled to the drive and defining a hole adjacent to the air vent, wherein the backplane is a circuit board having at least one electrical connector or socket.

11 . The system of claim 10 further comprising one or more additional drives coupled to the backplane, wherein the additional drives comprise air vents, and wherein one or more further holes are provided in the backplane adjacent to the air vents of the additional drives.

12 . The system of claim 10 further comprising one or more ducting pieces extending from the air vent through the hole in the backplane.

13 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a cabinet in which the backplane is mounted, wherein the one or more ducting pieces extend from the air vent to a hole provided in the cabinet.
