Abstract

A carousel-like continuous co-injection molding system includes an arrangement of upper and lower inclined feed channels. Each of the feed channels has a valve therein positioned upstream of an inlet to an associated mold cavity. The valve is controllable so that adjustments may be made in real time to achieve or maintain delivery of molten polymeric material to the mold cavity at constant pressure.

Claims (11)

1. A method of injection molding comprising:

continuously feeding a supply of a first molten polymeric material to a first nozzle in selective communication with a plurality of mold cavities;

continuously feeding a supply of a second molten polymeric material to a second nozzle in selective communication with the plurality of mold cavities, wherein the first nozzle is disposed at a higher elevation than a first inlet of at least one of the plurality of mold cavities, and wherein the second nozzle is disposed at an elevation equal to or higher than a second inlet of at least one of the plurality of mold cavities and at a lower elevation than the first nozzle,

and in continuously feeding the supply of the first molten polymeric material to the first nozzle in fluid communication with the plurality of mold cavities, dividing the first molten polymeric material into a plurality of upper feed channels, each of the upper feed channels being in selective communication with one of the mold cavities, and each of the upper feed channels being inclined at an angle depending downwardly from the higher elevation of the first nozzle to the lower elevation of the first inlet of each of the mold cavities,

and in continuously feeding the supply of the second molten polymeric material to the second nozzle in fluid communication with the plurality of mold cavities, dividing the second molten polymeric material into a plurality of lower feed channels, each of the lower feed channels being in selective communication with one of the mold cavities.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein a first sprue is provided intermediate of each of the upper feed channels and the respective mold cavity and a second sprue is provided intermediate of each of the lower feed channels and the respective mold cavity.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first nozzle and the second nozzle are in the same vertical axis, and rotating the mold cavities and upper feed channels and lower feed channels about the vertical axis of the first nozzle and the second nozzle.

The method of claim 3 , and in rotating the mold cavities and upper feed channels and lower feed channels about the vertical axis of the first nozzle and the second nozzle, the mold cavities are disposed in an arcuate arrangement relative to the vertical axis of the first nozzle and the second nozzle, and the upper feed channels are disposed in a conical distribution at least partially around the first nozzle.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the mold cavities are disposed in a circular arrangement relative to the vertical axis of the first nozzle and the second nozzle.

6. The method of claim 4 , and the lower feed channels are disposed in a conical distribution at least partially around the second nozzle.

7. The method of claim 5 , and the lower feed channels are disposed in a hub-and-spokes distribution at least partially around the second nozzle.
