Abstract

A fluid management system for use with a fluid reservoir includes an inflow pump and an outflow pump. The inflow pump is connectable to a probe for delivering a distention fluid to a body cavity. The outflow pump removes the distention fluid through the same probe, thus establishing a re-circulating volume of distention fluid within the body cavity. The removed fluid is filtered and returned to a fluid reservoir for eventual recycling to the body cavity. A controller adjusts the flow rates of the inflow pump and the outflow pump to maintain a pre-selected fluid pressure or volume within the body cavity.

Claims (35)

1. A fluid management system for supplying a distending fluid to a body space or potential space, said system comprising:

an inflow pump connectable to a fluid inflow line for providing an inflow of the distending fluid to the body space or potential space;

an outflow pump connectable to a fluid outflow line for removing the distending fluid from the body space or potential space;

wherein the inflow and outflow pumps are configured to maintain a distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space;

a first pressure sensor configured to provide a pressure signal indicative of the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space;

a second pressure sensor configured to provide a pressure signal indicative of the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space; and

a controller configured to compare the pressure signals from the first and second pressure sensors.

2. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to stop the inflow pump if the pressure signal from the first pressure sensor differs from the pressure signal from the second pressure sensor by a predetermined minimum amount.

3. The fluid management system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is configured to maintain the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space within a predetermined pressure range.

4. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to maintain the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space within a predetermined pressure range.

5. The fluid management system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid inflow line is fluidly coupled to a source of distending fluid.

6. The fluid management system of claim 5 , wherein the fluid outflow line is fluidly coupled to the source of distending fluid.

7. The fluid management system of claim 6 , further comprising a filter system fluidly coupled to the fluid outflow line.

8. The fluid management system of claim 7 , wherein the distending fluid is re-circulated.

9. A tissue resection system, comprising:

an endoscope positionable within a body space or potential space, the endoscope including a working channel and a fluid inflow lumen;

a resection device extendable through the working channel of the endoscope into the body space or potential space, the resection device including a tissue extraction lumen;

a fluid management system comprising:

an inflow pump configured to provide an inflow of a distending fluid through the fluid inflow lumen to the body space or potential space;

an outflow pump configured to remove the distending fluid through the fluid outflow lumen from the body space or potential space;

wherein the inflow and outflow pumps are configured to maintain a distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space;

a first pressure sensor configured to provide a pressure signal indicative of the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space;

a second pressure sensor configured to provide a pressure signal indicative of the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space; and

a controller configured to compare the pressure signals from the first and second pressure sensors.

10. The tissue resection system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to stop the inflow pump if the pressure signal from the first pressure sensor differs from the pressure signal from the second pressure sensor by a predetermined minimum amount.

11. The tissue resection system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to maintain the distending fluid pressure in the body space or potential space within a predetermined pressure range.

12. The tissue resection system of claim 9 , wherein the fluid inflow lumen is fluidly coupled to a source of distending fluid.

13. The tissue resection system of claim 12 , wherein the fluid outflow lumen is fluidly coupled to the source of distending fluid.

14. The tissue resection system of claim 9 , wherein the resection device includes an elongate outer tube and an elongate inner tube movably positioned within the outer tube.

15. The tissue resection system of claim 14 , wherein the outer tube includes a tissue receiving window and the inner tube is configured to move across the tissue receiving window to resect tissue.

16. The tissue resection system of claim 14 , wherein the inner tube is configured to longitudinally reciprocate within the outer tube to resect tissue.

17. The tissue resection system of claim 16 , wherein the outer tube includes a tissue receiving window and the inner tube is configured to reciprocate across the tissue receiving window to resect tissue.

18. The tissue resection system of claim 17 , wherein the inner tube includes an active electrode positioned at a distal end thereof for resecting tissue.

19. The tissue resection system of claim 18 , wherein the outer tube defines a return electrode providing an electrical pathway between the active electrode and the return electrode.

20. The tissue resection system of claim 14 , wherein the inner tube is configured to rotate within the outer tube to resect tissue.
