Abstract

A non-leaching mediator may include a polymer having a polymeric backbone, and a plurality of phenothiazine groups bonded to the polymeric backbone. The plurality of phenothiazine groups may include at least one of a phenothiazine group having the general formula (IV): and salts thereof, where n is about 9 and “R” represents the polymeric backbone to which the phenothiazine group is bonded, and a phenothiazine group having the general formula (V): and salts thereof, where n is about 9 and “R” represents the polymeric backbone to which the phenothiazine group is bonded.

Claims (30)

1. A polymer comprising the general formula (VIII):

and salts thereof;

where R′ is an organic group,

m is 0 or 1,

n is about 9, and

x and y independently are an integer from 1 to 10,000.

2. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the sum of x and y is from 10 to 10,000.

3. The polymer of claim 2 , wherein the sum of x and y is from 20 to 1,000.

4. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 1 to 70.

5. The polymer of claim 4 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 2 to 20.

6. The polymer of claim 4 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 10 to 30.

7. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein m is 1 and R′ is an aliphatic group.

8. The polymer of claim 7 , wherein R′ is an alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbons atoms.

9. The polymer of claim 7 , wherein R′ is an aryl group.

10. An electrochemical test sensor including a mediator, the mediator including a polymer comprising the general formula (VIII):

and salts thereof;

where R′ is an organic group,

m is 0 or 1,

n is about 9, and

x and y independently are an integer from 1 to 10,000.

11. The test sensor of claim 10 , wherein the sum of x and y is from 10 to 10,000.

12. The test sensor of claim 11 , wherein the sum of x and y is from 20 to 1,000.

13. The test sensor of claim 10 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 1 to 70.

14. The test sensor of claim 13 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 2 to 20.

15. The test sensor of claim 13 , wherein x and y independently are an integer from 10 to 30.

16. The test sensor of claim 10 , wherein m is 1 and R′ is an aliphatic group.

17. The test sensor of claim 16 , wherein R′ is an alky group having from 1 to 10 carbons atoms.

18. The test sensor of claim 16 , wherein R′ is an alkyl group.

19. The test sensor of claim 10 further including glucose oxidase.

20. The test sensor of claim 10 further including glucose dehydrogenase.
