Abstract

A server computing system in a client-server computing environment includes a virtual display driver that marshals and transmits graphics application programming interface (API) functions to a client via a network. The server may receive capability information from the client, allowing the virtual display driver to resolve differences between the APIs supported on the server and the client.

Claims (30)

1. A method for providing cloud-based cross-platform remote access to graphics applications, the method comprising:

receiving a request over a communication interface from a server at a cloud server, wherein the request was received by the server from a client device, the client device having a client library accessing a server application having a server library, and the client library is different from the server library;

executing instructions stored in memory, wherein execution of the instructions by a processor:

initiates the server application, wherein the server application makes a graphics call to the server library, and

encodes the graphics calls associated with the initiated server application in accordance with the graphics capability comprised of information regarding the client library; and

transmitting the encoded graphics calls for execution at the client device using graphics capabilities comprised of the client library.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server receives compatibility information from the client device regarding the graphics capabilities of the client device, and the graphics capabilities including information regarding the client library.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising the cloud server receiving the compatibility information from the server.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cloud server transmits the encoded graphics calls directly to the client device over the communication interface.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cloud server transmits the encoded graphics calls to the server and the server transmits the encoded graphics calls to the client device.

6. The method of claim 1 , where the cloud server and the client device operate on different computing platforms.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the client device and server exchange capability information.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the client device and cloud server exchange capability information.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the server library is a three dimensional (3D) library, the graphics call is a 3D graphics call, and the server application is a 3D graphics application.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the graphics call is a three dimensional (3D) graphics call that is translated into a two dimensional (2D) graphics call before the graphics call is encoded.

11. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor to perform a method for providing cloud-based cross-platform remote access to graphics applications, the method comprising:

receiving a request over a communication interface from a server at a cloud server, wherein the request was received by the server from a client device, the client device having a client library accessing a server application having a server library, and the client library is different from the server library;

executing instructions stored in memory, wherein execution of the instructions by a processor:

initiates the server application, wherein the server application makes a graphics call to the server library; and

encodes the graphics call associated with the initiated server application in accordance with the graphics capability comprised of information regarding the client library; and

transmitting the encoded graphics call for execution at the client device using graphics capabilities comprised of the client library.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the server receives compatibility information from the client device regarding the graphics capabilities of the client device, and the graphics capabilities including information regarding the client library.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 12 , further comprising the cloud server receiving the compatibility information from the server.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the cloud server transmits the encoded graphics calls directly to the client device over the communication interface.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the cloud server transmits the encoded graphics calls to the server and the server transmits the encoded graphics calls to the client device.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , where the cloud server and the client device operate on different computing platforms.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the client device and server exchange capability information.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the client device and cloud server exchange capability information.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the server library is a three dimensional (3D) library, the graphics call is a 3D graphics call, and the server application is a 3D graphics application.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the graphics call is a three dimensional (3D) graphics call that is translated into a two dimensional (2D) graphics call before the graphics call is encoded.
