Abstract

A method for enabling a consumer to remotely manage a media content subscription is described. The method includes transmitting, over a network from a computing device associated with a consumer, a request to set up an account. The request is received at a local point of presence having an address within the local media market in which a local media content provider is providing the media content subscription. The local point of present includes a storage device and a plurality of servers located within the local media market, with the plurality of servers being configured to execute computer programmed instructions to receive the request to set up the account and, in response, create a user profile and an account associated with the consumer. The method further includes transmitting, over the network from the computing device associated with the consumer, at least one of user profile information, account information, and subscription information, which is stored on the storage device of the local point of presence.

Claims (35)

1. A method of remotely managing a media content subscription that is provided by a local media content provider within a local media market, the method comprising:

transmitting, over a network from a computing device associated with a consumer, a request to set-up an account, the request being received at a local point of presence having an address within the local media market in which the local media content provider is providing the media content subscription, the local point of presence comprised of a storage device and a plurality of servers, the storage device and the plurality of servers being located within the local media market, and the plurality of servers being configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to:

receive the request to set-up the account; and

responsive to the request to set-up the account, create a user profile and an account associated with the consumer;

transmitting, over the network from the computing device associated with the consumer to the plurality of servers located within the local media market, at least one of user profile information, account information, and subscription information, the at least one of user profile information, account information, and subscription information being stored on the storage device of the local point of presence; and

transmitting, via the network from the computing device to the plurality of servers located within the local media market, a request to access media content that is available to the consumer under the media content subscription, the plurality of servers being further configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to:

receive the request to access media content;

responsive to the request to access media content, capture media content from the local media content provider;

transform the captured media content into a digital stream, the digital stream being suitable to stream over the network; and

stream the digital stream over the network; and

receiving the digital stream at the computing device via the network.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

transmitting, over the network from the computing device to a second local point of presence, a subscription order to subscribe to a second media content subscription that is provided by a second local media content provider within a second local media market, the second local point of presence having an address within said second local media market and comprised of a second storage device and a second plurality of servers, the second storage device and second plurality of servers being located within said second local media market, and the subscription order being submitted to the second local media content provider by the second local point of presence on behalf of the consumer and including the address of the second local point of presence within said second local media market.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

transmitting, via the network from the computing device to the second plurality of servers located within said second local media market, a second request to access media content that is available to the consumer under the second media content subscription, the second plurality of servers located within the second local media market being configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to:

receive the second request to access media content;

responsive to the second request to access media content, capture media content from the second local media content provider;

transform the captured media content from the second local media content provider into a second digital stream, the second digital stream being suitable to stream over the network; and

stream the second digital stream over the network; and

receiving the second digital stream at the computing device via the network.

4. A machine-readable device storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor in a computing device associated with a consumer, cause the at least one processor to perform the following actions:

transmitting, over a network from the computing device associated with the consumer, a request to set-up an account, the request being received at a local point of presence having an address within the local media market in which the local media content provider is providing the media content subscription, the local point of presence comprised of a storage device and a plurality of servers, the storage device and the plurality of servers being located within the local media market, and the plurality of servers being configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to:

receive the request to set-up the account; and,

responsive to the request to set-up the account, create a user profile and an account associated with the consumer;

transmitting, over the network from the computing device associated with the consumer to the plurality of servers located within the local media market, at least one of user profile information, account information, and subscription information, the at least one of user profile information, account information, and subscription information being stored on the storage device of the local point of presence; and

transmitting, over the network from the computing device associated with the consumer to the plurality of servers located within the local media market, a request to access media content that is available to the consumer under the media content subscription, the plurality of servers being further configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to:

receive the request to access media content that is available under the media content subscription;

responsive to the request to access media content, capture media content from the local media content provider;

transform the captured media content into a digital stream, the digital stream being suitable to stream over the network; and

stream the digital stream over the network; and

receiving the digital stream at the computing device via the network.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network includes the Internet.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting, over the network from the computing device associated with the consumer to the plurality of servers located within the local media market, a request to record media content, the plurality of servers being connected to a cloud-based server via the network and the cloud-based server being configured to execute computer-programmed instructions to receive the digital stream from the local point of presence via the network and to store the digital stream received from the local point of presence.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the computing device associated with the consumer receives the digital stream from the cloud-based server via the network.
