Abstract

Methods and systems for automatically pulsing different aspiration levels to an ocular probe are disclosed. The probe may be a phacoemulsification probe. A first aspiration level, supplied by a first pump, may be applied to the probe simultaneously with ultrasonic energy. A second aspiration level, supplied by a second pump, may be automatically switched from the first aspiration level, and applied to the probe in a pulsed manner.

Claims (10)

1. A phacoemulsification system, comprising:

a probe having a distal tip insertable into an eye, the distal tip energizable with ultrasonic energy and having an aspiration port; and

a console coupled with the aspiration port along an aspiration pathway, wherein the console comprises a processor and a pump system, and wherein the pump system comprises a first pump for providing a first pump rate and a second pump for providing a second pump rate that is higher than the first pump rate; wherein the processor is configured to activate the first pump and energize the distal tip with ultrasonic energy while the first pump is activated, activate the second pump and deactivate the first pump while the second pump is activated, and disable ultrasonic energy from being applied to the distal tip while the second pump is activated.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the pump system comprises a peristaltic pump for providing the first pump rate and a venturi pump for providing the second pump rate.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is additionally configured to detect that the aspiration port is insufficiently occluded, and stop energizing or decrease the ultrasonic energy to the distal tip when the aspiration port is insufficiently occluded.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second pump operates when the distal tip is not energized with the ultrasonic energy.

5. A phacoemulsification system, comprising:

a probe having a distal tip insertable into an eye, the distal tip energizable with ultrasonic energy and having an aspiration port; and

a console coupled with the aspiration port along an aspiration pathway, wherein the console comprises a processor and a pump system, wherein the pump system comprises a first pump for providing a first pump rate and a second pump for providing a second pump rate that is higher than the first pump rate;

wherein, the processor is configured to activate the first pump and energize the distal tip with the ultrasonic energy according to a predetermined duty cycle in response to a first input, activate the second pump in response to a second input, and disable ultrasonic energy from being applied to the distal tip while the second pump is activated.
