Abstract

The technology relates to vehicle panels. The vehicle panel may comprise a top layer and a bottom layer. The top and bottom layers may be bonded together. The bond of the top and bottom layer may be a weld. One or more energy absorbing layers may be positioned between the top layer and the bottom layer. The one or more energy absorbing layers may be comprised of one or more energy absorbing materials. The energy absorbing layers may be aluminum honeycomb and polyurethane foam.

Claims (37)

1. A vehicle panel comprising:

a top layer;

a bottom layer, wherein the bottom layer is bonded to the top layer; and

two or more energy absorbing layers comprising a first inner layer and a second inner layer, wherein the two or more energy absorbing layers are comprised of two or more energy absorbing materials, and the two or more energy absorbing layers are positioned between the top layer and the bottom layer such that the first inner layer is provided flush between the bottom layer and the second inner layer and the second inner layer is provided flush between the top layer and the first inner layer,

wherein the bottom layer, the top layer or the top and bottom layers include one or more cone forms or cutouts.

2. The vehicle panel of claim 1 , wherein the top layer and the bottom layer include steel; and

wherein the bond of top layer and the bottom layer is a weld.

3. The vehicle panel of claim 2 , wherein a thickness of the steel is less than 0.40 mm.

4. The vehicle panel of claim 1 , wherein the first inner layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers is comprised of polyurethane foam.

5. The vehicle panel of claim 4 , wherein the top layer and the bottom layer include steel;

wherein a thickness of the steel is no more than 0.4 mm; and

a thickness of the first inner layer is no more than 20.6 mm thick.

6. The vehicle panel of claim 4 , wherein the second inner layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers is comprised of honeycomb aluminum.

7. The vehicle panel of claim 1 , wherein the bottom layer includes the one or more cone forms or cutouts.

8. The vehicle panel of claim 1 , wherein the one or more cone forms are coated with an adhesive.

9. The vehicle panel of claim 1 , wherein the panel is a vehicle hood panel.

10. A vehicle panel comprising:

a top layer comprising steel;

a bottom layer, comprising steel, wherein the bottom layer is bonded to the top layer; and

two or more energy absorbing layers, wherein a first layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers is comprised of one or more energy absorbing materials, comprising polyurethane foam, and the two or more energy absorbing layers are positioned between the top layer and the bottom layer such that the first layer is provided flush between the bottom layer and a second layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers and the second layer is provided flush between the top layer and the first layer,

wherein the bottom layer, the top layer or the top and bottom layers include one or more forms and the one or more forms includes one or more cone forms.

11. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein the bond of top layer and the bottom layer is a weld.

12. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein a thickness of the steel is less than 0.40 mm.

13. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein the second layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers is comprised of honeycomb aluminum.

14. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein the bottom layer includes the one or more cone forms.

15. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein the one or more cone forms are coated with an adhesive.

16. The vehicle panel of claim 10 , wherein the panel is a vehicle hood panel.

17. The vehicle panel of claim 13 , wherein the polyurethane foam is no more than 20 mm thick; and

the second layer of the two or more energy absorbing layers is no more than 0.6 mm thick.

18. A vehicle panel comprising:

a top layer comprising steel;

a bottom layer, comprising steel, wherein the bottom layer is bonded to the top layer;

a first energy absorbing layer, wherein the first energy absorbing layer is comprised of at least 20 mm thick polyurethane foam; and

a second energy absorbing layer, wherein the second energy absorbing layer is comprised of an aluminum honeycomb,

wherein the first energy absorbing layer is provided flush between the bottom layer and the second energy absorbing layer and the second energy absorbing layer is provided flush between the top layer and the first energy absorbing layer.

19. The vehicle panel of claim 18 wherein the bond of top layer and the bottom layer is a weld.

20. The vehicle panel of claim 18 , wherein the top layer and the bottom layer are no more than 0.4 mm thick.
