Abstract

A system and method for monitoring the health of an animal using multiple sensors is described. The wearable device may include one or more sensors whose resultant signal levels may be analyzed in the wearable device or uploaded to a data management server for additional analysis. One or more embodiments include variations of the sensor system to accommodate differences in animals, including tracking vital signs over a period of time and comparing recorded values with an individual or species-based trendline. A deviation from the trendline may be signaled by alerting a user associated with the device about the deviation.

Claims (22)

1 . A wearable device for an animal comprising:

a housing;

an Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) signal generator;

a UWB antenna configured to output signals from the UWB signal generator;

a receiver configured to receive reflected UWB signals;

an accelerometer configured to determine tri-axial acceleration of the animal and output the determined tri-axial acceleration as acceleration signals;

a processor configured to estimate the caloric output of the animal based on processing of the acceleration signals.

2 . The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine an individual baseline for the animal based on the processing of the acceleration signals.

3 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein determining the individual baseline comprises applying a weighting value to a portion of the acceleration signals.

4 . A method comprising:

receiving, by a processing device, signals indicative of acceleration data from an accelerometer located on a wearable device for an animal;

establishing, based on the signals, an individual baseline;

receiving, by the processing device, further signals indicative of acceleration data from the accelerometer.

determining, based on the additional received signals, a deviation from the individual baseline; and

transmitting, by the processing device, a message indicative of the observation of the deviation.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the individual baseline comprises an average activity level for the animal, and wherein the deviation from the individual baseline comprises an activity level for a period of time below the average activity level.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

updating, by the processing device, a configuration parameter for the accelerometer based on the determination of the deviation from the individual baseline, wherein updating the configuration parameter increases the sensitivity of the accelerometer.

7 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

transmitting, by the processor, a message indicative of the acceleration data to a remote device;

receiving, by the processor, a population baseline associated with a plurality of animals; and

determining, by the processor and based on the further signals, a deviation from the population baseline.
