Abstract

In one embodiment, a system includes a processor and logic integrated with and/or executable by the processor, the logic being configured to: receive a request to record a television program; receive the television program; record the television program by storing a representation of the television program; receive a request to send the representation of the television program to a handheld device; reduce a size of the representation of the television program; and send the reduced-size representation of the television program to the handheld device via a network, where the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network, and where reducing the size of the representation of the television program is based, at least in part, on an attribute associated with the network and/or the handheld device.

Claims (63)

1. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program code embodied therewith, the program code readable and/or executable by a processor to cause the processor to:

receive a first request to record a first television program;

receive the first television program;

record the first television program by storing a representation of the first television program;

receive a first request to send the representation of the first television program to a handheld device;

receive a requested quality of the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device;

reduce a size of the representation of the first television program to create a reduced-size representation of the first television program that has the requested quality; and

send the reduced-size representation of the first television program to the handheld device via a network,

wherein the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network.

2. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the first request to record the first television program is initiated on the handheld device and/or a website.

3. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the first request to send the representation of the first television program to the handheld device is initiated on the handheld device and/or a website.

4. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device is selected from a listing displayable on the handheld device.

5. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the processor is operatively coupled to a digital video recorder.

6. The computer program product of claim 5 , wherein the first request to send the representation of the first television program to the handheld device is initiated on the digital video recorder.

7. The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the first television program is received in a satellite signal and/or in a cable signal.

The computer program product of claim 1 , wherein the representation of the first television program is received from an intermediary device via a network, wherein the intermediary device is selected from the group consisting of: a cable box, set top box, a digital video recorder, and a satellite antenna box.

9. The computer program product of claim 1 , comprising program code readable and/or executable by the processor to cause the processor to:

receive, from the handheld device, a request for a listing of the representations of the programs stored on the non-transitory computer readable storage medium; and

send the listing of the representations to the handheld device,

wherein the request to send the representation of the television program to the handheld device is initiated on the handheld device and includes selection of an entry from the listing.

10. The computer program product of claim 1 , comprising program code readable and/or executable by the processor to cause the processor to:

receive a second request to record a second television program;

receive the second television program;

record the second television program by storing a representation of the second television program;

receive a second request to send the representation of the second television program to a second handheld device;

reduce a size of the representation of the second television program; and

send the reduced-size representation of the second television program to the second handheld device via the network,

wherein reducing the size of the representation of the second television program is based, at least in part, on an attribute associated with the network.

11. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving a first request to record a first television program;

receiving the first television program;

recording the first television program by storing a representation of the first television program;

receiving a first request to send the representation of the first television program to a handheld device;

receiving a requested quality of the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device;

reducing a size of the representation of the first television program to create a reduced-size representation of the first television program that has the requested quality; and

sending the reduced-size representation of the first television program to the handheld device via a network,

wherein the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the method is implemented by a processor operatively coupled to a digital video recorder.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first request to record the first television program is initiated on at least one of: the handheld device, a digital video recorder, and a website.

14. A system, comprising:

a processor and logic integrated with and/or executable by the processor, the logic being configured to:

receive a first request to record a first television program;

receive the first television program;

record the first television program by storing a representation of the first television program;

receive a first request to send the representation of the first television program to a handheld device;

receive a requested quality of the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device;

reduce a size of the representation of the first television program to create a reduced-size representation of the first television program that has the requested quality; and

send the reduced-size representation of the first television program to the handheld device via a network,

wherein the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor is operatively coupled to a digital video recorder.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first request to record the first television program is initiated on at least one of: the handheld, the digital video recorder, and a website.

17. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program code embodied therewith, the program code readable and/or executable by a processor to cause the processor to:

send a first request for a representation of a first television program to a handheld device;

send a requested quality of the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device; and

receive at the handheld device a reduced-size representation of the first television program via a network, where a size of the representation of the first television program is reduced to create the reduced-size representation of the first television program that has the requested quality;

wherein the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 , wherein the processor is operatively coupled to the handheld device.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein the first request for the representation of the television program is initiated on the handheld device.

20. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

sending a first request for a representation of a first television program to a handheld device;

sending a requested quality of the representation of the first television program to be sent to the handheld device; and

receiving at the handheld device a reduced-size representation of the first television program via a network, where a size of the representation of the first television program is reduced to create the reduced-size representation of the first television program that has the requested quality;

wherein the network is selected from the group consisting of: the Internet, a wireless network, a local area network, a cable television network, and a mobile telephony network.
