Abstract

A fiducial on a backer of a flatbed scanner is used for determining a media size of a target scanned on the platen of the scanner. The fiducial is comprised of a plurality of symbols, either arranged in a predetermined pattern or randomly within a fiducial frame, and is placed at a predetermined location on the backer on the scanner lid. Each symbol has a finish that reflects light differently than a finish on the backer and has a high peak correlation value and a low off-peak correlation value when scanned. Image data from a scan of a target along with the backer is searched for the fiducial image. When the fiducial image is found, the media is selected to be of a first shorter length target type and, when the fiducial is not found, the target is selected to be of a second longer length target type.

Claims (45)

1. A scanner comprising:

a housing having a base and a scan lid openable with respect to the base;

the base comprising:

a platen having a scan area thereon, the scan area having a top edge, a bottom edge, and a first side edge and a second side edge;

a first scan bar translateably mounted below the platen; and,

a drive for translating the first scan bar;

the scan lid comprising:

a backer mounted on an interior surface of the scan lid, the backer sized to substantially cover the scan area and having an outer surface facing the platen when the scan lid is in a closed position; and,

a fiducial placed on the outer surface of the backer at a predetermined location that is within the scan area immediately adjacent to one of the first side edge and the second side edge thereof when the scan lid is in the closed position;

and,

a controller configurable to control operation of the first scan bar and the drive, the controller configured to:

scan the backer and a target placed on the platen with the first scan bar being translated by the drive to create a scanned image of the backer and the target; and,

search the scanned image for a fiducial image, and, on finding the fiducial image, select the target to be of a first target type having a first length, and, on not finding the fiducial image, selecting the target to be of a second target type having a second length longer than the first length,

wherein the fiducial has a finish that reflects light differently than a finish on the outer surface of the backer.

2. The scanner of claim 1 wherein the fiducial includes a plurality of symbols arranged within and adjacent to a frame with each symbol having a high correlation peak value when scanned.

3. The scanner of claim 2 wherein the plurality of symbols is arranged in a predetermined pattern.

4. The scanner of claim 2 wherein the plurality of symbols is arranged in a random pattern.

5. The scanner of claim 2 wherein the plurality of symbols includes a first symbol type and a second symbol type.

6. The scanner of claim 1 wherein the predetermined location of the fiducial is between a location L 1 corresponding to a bottom edge of the first target type and a location L 2 corresponding to a bottom edge of the second target type where L 2 >L 1 , and wherein respective bottom edges of the first target type and the second target type are substantially perpendicular to a scan direction of the first scan bar.

7. The scanner of claim 6 wherein the location L 1 is about 279 mm from the top edge of the scan area and the location L 2 is about 356 mm from the top edge of the scan area.

8. The scanner of claim 6 wherein the location L 1 is about 148 mm from the top edge of the scan area and the location L 2 is about 279 mm from the top edge of the scan area.

9. A backer for a flatbed scanner having a platen with a scan area and a scan lid, the backer comprising:

a compliant member mountable on an interior surface of the scan lid, the member sized to substantially cover the scan area on the platen, the member having an outer surface facing the platen when the scan lid is in a closed position; and,

a fiducial placed on the outer surface of the member at a predetermined location that is within the scan area when the scan lid is in the closed position,

wherein the fiducial has a finish that reflects light differently than a finish on the outer surface of the backer, and

wherein the scan area includes a top edge, a bottom edge, a first side edge, and second side edge and the fiducial is located immediately adjacent to one of the first side edge and the second side edge.

10. The backer of claim 9 wherein the fiducial is positioned between a location L 1 corresponding to a bottom edge of a first target type and a location L 2 corresponding to a bottom edge of a second target type where L 2 >L 1 , and wherein respective bottom edges of the first target type and the second target type are substantially perpendicular to a scan direction on the scan area.

11. The backer of claim 10 wherein the location L 1 is about 279 mm from the top edge of the scan area and the location L 2 is about 356 mm from the top edge of the scan area.

12. The backer of claim 10 wherein the location L 1 is about 148 mm from the top edge of the scan area and the location L 2 is about 280 mm from the top edge of the scan area.

13. The backer of claim 9 wherein the outer surface of the backer has one of a white finish, a black finish, and a grey finish and each symbol in the fiducial has a finish that reflects light differently than the finish on the outer surface of the backer.

14. The backer of claim 9 wherein the fiducial includes a plurality of symbols positioned within and adjacent to a frame at the predetermined location on the backer.

15. The backer of claim 14 wherein the plurality of symbols is arranged in one of a predetermined pattern and a random pattern.

16. The backer of claim 14 wherein the plurality of symbols includes a first symbol type and a second symbol type.

17. A fiducial for a backer of a scan lid of a flatbed scanner having a platen with a scan area, the fiducial comprising:

a plurality of symbols placed on an outer surface of the backer within a frame at a location that is within the scan area when the scan lid is in a closed position,

wherein the plurality of symbols is arranged in one of a predetermined pattern and a random pattern within the frame, with each symbol having a finish that reflects light differently than a finish on the outer surface of the backer and having a high peak correlation value and a low off-peak correlation value when scanned, and
