Abstract

A system for reducing ammonia (NH 3 ) emissions includes (a) a first component comprising a first substrate containing a three-way catalyst, wherein the first component is disposed upstream of a second component comprising a second substrate containing an ammonia oxidation catalyst, wherein said ammonia oxidation catalyst comprises a small pore molecular sieve supporting at least one transition metal; and (b) an oxygen-containing gas input disposed between the components. For example, a CHA Framework Type small pore molecular sieve may be used. A method for reducing NH 3 emission includes introducing an oxygen-containing gas into a gas stream to produce an oxygenated gas stream; and exposing the oxygenated gas stream to an NH 3 oxidation catalyst to selectively oxidize at least a portion of the NH 3 to N 2 . The method may further include the step of exposing a rich burn exhaust gas to a three-way catalyst to produce the gas stream comprising NH 3 .

Claims (19)

1. A catalyst article comprising:

(a) a washcoat comprising an ammonia oxidation catalyst, wherein the ammonia oxidation catalyst comprises a small pore molecular sieve supporting at least one exchanged transitional metal and a free transition metal, where the exchanged transitional metal and free transition metal are the same or different, wherein the ammonia oxidation catalyst is effective at oxidizing ammonia in an exhaust gas stream; and

(b) a substrate upon which the washcoat is coated,

wherein the washcoat is a single layer on the substrate.

2. The catalyst article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one transition metal is selected from the group consisting of chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), cerium (Ce), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), gallium (Ga), molybdenum (Mo), silver (Ag), indium (In), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), rhenium (Re), iridium (Ir), platinum (Pt), and tin (Sn), and mixtures thereof.

3. The catalyst article of claim 1 , wherein the washcoat further comprises a second small pore molecular sieve supporting a metal selected from copper and iron.

4. The catalyst article of claim 1 , wherein the washcoat further comprises at least one of alumina, silica, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , CeO 2 , and SnO 2 .

5. The catalyst article of claim 1 , wherein the at least one transition metal is selected from the group consisting of chromium (Cr), cerium (Ce), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and copper (Cu), and mixtures thereof.

6. A system for treating NH 3 in an exhaust gas comprising:

(a) a first catalyst article comprising:

i. an ammonia oxidation catalyst composition comprising a small pore molecular sieve supporting a transition metal selected from Cu, Fe, Ce, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ga, Mo, and Cr, wherein the ammonia oxidation catalyst is effective at oxidizing ammonia in an exhaust gas stream; and

ii. a first substrate upon which the ammonia oxidation catalyst is coated, wherein the ammonia oxidation catalyst and the substrate are free of Platinum Group Metals,

(b) a second catalyst article comprising:

i. a Platinum Group Metal; and

ii. a second substrate upon which the Platinum Group Metal is coated,

wherein the first catalyst article is disposed downstream of the second catalyst article.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the Platinum Group Metal is disposed in a first layer on the second substrate, and the second substrate further comprises a non-Platinum Group Metal disposed on the second substrate as a second layer.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second catalyst article is effective at one or more of storing NOx, suppressing H 2 S, and storing HC.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the second catalyst article is a source of ammonia.
