Abstract

Folding display panels for large-format displays. In an example, the folding display panels are electrically connected by a power cable and a data cable that respectively include a data wire and power wire, and each cable includes a fixed-length section attached at one end to a movable member. When folding adjacent display panels face-to-face, the movable member moves so that the fixed-length section remains taut. Slack in the data wire and power wire accommodate the movement of the corresponding fixed-length section. A column of display panels can be z-folded for compact storage and can be rapidly deployed to form a large-format display.

Claims (12)

1. A folding display panel apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of columns of display panels, each of the columns of display panels configured to transition between a collapsed z-folded configuration and an expanded configuration, wherein each of the columns of display panels includes:

first and second ones of the display panels that each include a front side having an array of light-emitting pixels, a back side having a movable member, a top edge, opposite side edges and a bottom edge, with the first and second display panels arranged edge-to-edge;

at least one flexible support cable that mechanically and flexibly connects the first and second display panels and that is configured to support the first and second display panels in a vertical arrangement and to fold with the first and second display panels into a collapsed arrangement; and

at least one electrical cable that electrically connects the first and second display panels, the at least one electrical cable including at least one data wire and at least one power wire, the at least one electrical cable having a fixed-length cable section that runs between the first and second display panels, wherein one end of the fixed-length cable section is attached to at least one of the first or second display panel movable members, and wherein the data and power wires each have an amount of slack that resides outside of the fixed-length cable section adjacent the movable member,

wherein the movable member is configured so that when the first and second display panels are folded front-side to front-side, the movable member moves toward an edge of the one of the first and second display panels to accommodate a bend in the fixed-length cable section of the at least one cable, while the amount of slack in the data and power wires changes.

2. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one data wire and the at least one power wire are electrically connected to a printed circuit board supported on the back side of the second display panel.

3. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the movable member includes a plate and at least one spring for resisting movement of the plate, whereby the movable member is spring loaded.

4. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the movable member includes guides to permit sliding movement in a guided manner along the back side of the second display panel.

5. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the movable member engages and compresses a resilient member when the movable member moves towards the edge of the one of the first and second display panels.

6. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one electrical cable includes a first electrical cable that carries electrical power via the at least one power wire, and a second electrical cable that carries display data via the at least one data wire.

7. The folding display panel apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one flexible support cable includes a pair of flexible support cables that run substantially parallel to and inboard of the side edges of each of the first and second display panels and that mechanically and flexibly connect the first and second display panels.
