Abstract

An electrosurgical instrument is provided that captures, compresses, fuses and cuts tissue between upper and lower jaws connected to pivotably movable handles. The instrument includes a force and over compression regulation mechanism that is configured such that in a clamped configuration, the jaws delivers a gripping force between the first jaw and the second jaw between a predetermined minimum force and a predetermined maximum force.

Claims (46)

1. An electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a lower handle having a proximal end and a distal end;

an upper jaw coupled to the distal end of the lower handle, the upper jaw having at least one electrode;

an upper handle having a proximal end and a distal end; and

a lower jaw coupled to the distal end of the upper handle, the lower jaw pivotably connected to the upper jaw;

wherein a portion of the lower handle decouples from the upper jaw when the upper and lower jaws are proximate each other in a closed position;

wherein the lower handle comprises a support spring and a lower handle housing having a cavity, the support spring being enclosed within the cavity of the lower handle housing and the lower handle comprises a support arm coupled to the support spring and a proximal portion of the support arm is enclosed within the cavity of the lower handle housing;

wherein the lower handle comprises a jaw support joint disposed between the upper jaw and the lower handle housing, the jaw support joint having a cavity and a distal portion of the support arm being enclosed within the cavity of the jaw support joint.

2. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the proximal end of the upper handle has a finger loop and the proximal end of the lower handle has a finger loop.

3. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the lower handle housing has a curved surface that mates with a curved surface of the jaw support joint.

4. The instrument of claim 3 wherein the curved surface of the lower handle housing is a mirror image of the curved surface of the jaw support joint.

5. The instrument of claim 4 wherein the jaw support joint has a curved cutout that mates with a curved surface of the lower jaw.

6. The instrument of claim 1 wherein the at least one electrode of the upper jaw has a flat planar sealing surface facing the lower jaw and the lower jaw comprises a lower electrode having a flat planar sealing surface facing the upper jaw and operationally arranged to transmit RF energy between the electrodes; and the upper handle housing includes a switch arranged to contact the lower handle housing and activate through contact with the lower handle housing to connect to a supply of RF energy.

7. An electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a lower handle comprising a lower handle housing connected to a jaw support joint;

an upper jaw connected to the jaw support joint, the upper jaw having at least one electrode;

an upper handle; and

a lower jaw coupled to a distal end of the upper handle, the lower handle and the upper jaw movable relative to the upper handle and the lower jaw;

wherein the jaw support joint is aligned with the upper jaw and the lower handle housing when the upper handle is spaced from the lower handle and the lower handle housing pivots relative to the jaw support joint when the upper and lower handles are proximate each other in a fuse position;

wherein the lower handle includes a support spring disposed internally in the lower handle and not contactable by the upper handle and applying a predetermined force at the upper and lower jaws when the upper and lower handles are moved from a closed position to a fuse position;

wherein the upper handle includes a switch spaced from the lower handle when the upper and lower handles are in the closed position and the switch is in contact with the lower handle when the upper and lower handles are in the fuse position and the support spring is compressed when the switch is in contact with the lower handle; and

further comprising a support arm having a distal portion enclosed in the jaw support joint and a proximal portion enclosed in the lower handle, the support arm including a slot at the proximal portion of the support arm and the support spring is coupled to the proximal portion of the support arm adjacent to the slot.

8. The instrument of claim 7 wherein the slot is disposed along a direction traverse to a longitudinal axis of the instrument.

9. The instrument of claim 8 wherein the lower handle comprises a pin disposed within the slot of the support arm, the pin and the slot operatively movable relative to each other as the handles are moved from the closed position to the fuse position.

10. The instrument of claim 9 wherein the support arm is pivotably connected to the jaw support joint and the support spring biases the support arm and supplies a predetermined force to the upper and lower jaws through the support arm.

11. An electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a lower handle comprising a support arm and a support spring connected to the support arm;

an upper jaw connected to and extending from the lower handle, the upper jaw having at least one electrode;

an upper handle; and

a lower jaw connected to and extending from the upper handle, the lower and upper handles being movable from a spaced position to a proximate position and the support spring being uncompressed when the upper and lower handles are in the proximate position;

wherein the support spring is compressed and supplies a predetermined force to the upper and lower jaws through the support arm when RF energy is supplied to the at least one electrode;

wherein the support spring is positioned next to and against a proximal end of the support arm and the lower handle further comprises a lower handle housing including a cavity, the support spring being positioned next to and against a proximal portion of the lower handle housing within the cavity of the lower handle housing and the support spring being compressed between and against the proximal end of the support arm by the proximal portion of the lower handle housing within the cavity of the lower handle housing when RF energy is supplied to the at least one electrode.

12. An electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a lower handle comprising a support arm and a support spring connected to the support arm;

an upper jaw connected to and extending from the lower handle, the upper jaw having at least one electrode;

an upper handle; and

a lower jaw connected to and extending from the upper handle, the lower and upper handles being movable from a spaced position to a proximate position and the support spring being uncompressed when the upper and lower handles are in the proximate position;

wherein the support spring is compressed and supplies a predetermined force to the upper and lower jaws through the support arm when RF energy is supplied to the at least one electrode;

wherein the lower handle further comprises a jaw support joint and a lower handle housing and wherein a distal end of the support arm is affixed to and disposed within the jaw support joint and a proximal end of the support arm is disposed within the lower handle housing, the proximal end of the support arm being positioned on the support spring.

13. An electrosurgical instrument comprising:

a lower handle comprising a support arm and a support spring connected to the support arm;
