Abstract

A data storage system including a SSD includes a capability to detect whether its location is acceptable for function, and a capability to self-disable in the event the location of the device is unacceptable, or to self-enable only while the location of the device is acceptable.

Claims (42)

1 - 32 . (canceled)

33 . A method of securing a data storage device, comprising:

detecting an initial position of said persistent storage device, and storing said detected initial position in said persistent storage device;

repeatedly detecting a current position of said persistent storage device; and

self-disabling function of said persistent storage device when said current position indicates that said persistent storage device has been moved from said initial position.

34 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , wherein:

said repeatedly detecting is continuously detecting.

35 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , wherein:

said repeatedly detecting is periodically detecting.

36 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , wherein:

said persistent storage device is a solid state drive (SSD).

37 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using a LOng RAnge Navigation (LORAN) receiver.

38 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using an enhanced LOng RAnge Navigation (LORAN) receiver.

39 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , further comprising:

storing video data in said persistent storage device.

40 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 39 , wherein:

said video data is captured in a video front end associated with said persistent storage device.

41 . The method of securing a data storage device according to claim 33 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using an array of intra-building antennas.

42 . A method of securely storing data in a hard drive, comprising:

establishing an internally-determined current location of a hard drive device;

storing said internally-determined current location as an initial, authorized position for operation of said hard drive device;

detecting a current location of said hard drive device, during operation of said hard drive device; and

self-disabling function of said hard drive device when said current location indicates that said hard drive device has been moved from said initial, authorized position.

43 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , wherein:

said hard drive device is a solid state drive (SSD).

44 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , further comprising:

repeatedly detecting said current location of said hard drive device, during operation of said hard drive device.

45 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 44 , wherein:

said repeatedly detecting is periodically detecting.

46 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using a LOng RAnge Navigation (LORAN) receiver.

47 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using an enhanced LOng RAnge Navigation (LORAN) receiver.

48 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , further comprising:

storing video data in said hard drive device.

49 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 48 , wherein:

said video data is captured in a video front end associated with said hard drive device.

50 . The method of securely storing data in a hard drive according to claim 42 , further comprising:

detecting said current location using an array of intra-building antennas.
