Abstract

A surgical device includes a plurality of cameras integrated therein. The view of each of the plurality of cameras can be integrated together to provide a composite image. A surgical tool that includes an integrated camera may be used in conjunction with the surgical device. The image produced by the camera integrated with the surgical tool may be associated with the composite image generated by the plurality of cameras integrated in the surgical device. The position and orientation of the cameras and/or the surgical tool can be tracked, and the surgical tool can be rendered as transparent on the composite image. A surgical device may be powered by a hydraulic system, thereby reducing electromagnetic interference with tracking devices.

Claims (46)

1. A medical apparatus comprising:

at least one video camera comprising imaging optics and an optical sensor, said video camera including an optical path through said imaging optics to said optical sensor, said at least one video camera configured to acquire video images of a surgical site, said at least one video camera being a surgical microscope camera having a field of view that can be configured to include the surgical site, wherein the surgical microscope camera is configured to provide a surgical microscope view of the surgical site;

a binocular viewing platform comprising a housing and a plurality of oculars, the plurality of oculars configured to provide views of at least one display disposed in the housing, said at least one video camera disposed on said platform; and

processing electronics in communication with the at least one display, wherein the processing electronics is configured to:

receive video images acquired by the at least one video camera,

provide output video images based on the received video images, and

present the output video images on the at least one display so that the output video images are viewable through the oculars,

wherein said imaging optics comprises a turning mirror or turning prism to fold the optical path underneath the viewing platform to decrease the physical extent of the at least one video camera under the viewing platform, and

wherein the surgical microscope camera is not coupled to a direct view surgical microscope.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the binocular viewing platform further comprises at least one redirection element comprising a reflective surface, the at least one redirection element disposed in the housing to redirect an optical path of video images from the at least one display to the plurality of oculars.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a viewing articulating arm, the binocular viewing platform disposed on the viewing articulating arm, the viewing articulating arm configured to adjust a position of the binocular viewing platform.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said binocular viewing platform is configured not to provide a surgical microscope view via an optical path from an ocular of said plurality of oculars through an aperture in said housing.

5. A medical apparatus comprising:

an auxiliary optical assembly comprising at least one video camera, said at least one video camera comprising imaging optics and an optical sensor, said at least one video camera configured to acquire video images of a surgical site, said at least one video camera being a surgical microscope camera having a field of view that can be configured to include the surgical site, wherein the surgical microscope camera is configured to provide a surgical microscope view of the surgical site;

a binocular viewing platform comprising a housing and a plurality of oculars, the plurality of oculars configured to provide views of at least one display disposed in the housing, the plurality of oculars comprising a left ocular and a right ocular, each ocular being tubular;

a viewing articulating arm, the binocular viewing platform disposed on the viewing articulating arm, the viewing articulating arm configured to adjust a position of the binocular viewing platform;

a second articulating arm, the auxiliary optical assembly disposed on the second articulating arm so that the auxiliary optical assembly can be positioned independently of the binocular viewing platform; and

processing electronics in communication with the at least one display, wherein the processing electronics is configured to:

receive video images acquired by the at least one video camera,

provide output video images based on the received video images, and

present the output video images on the at least one display so that the output video images are viewable through the oculars,

wherein said at least one video camera is separate from the binocular viewing platform such that the at least one video camera is configured to be positioned independent of the binocular viewing platform,

wherein the surgical microscope camera is not coupled to a direct view surgical microscope,

wherein a surgeon can ergonomically perform surgery while situated at the surgical site while viewing through the plurality of oculars that output video images of the surgical site displayed on said at least one display, and

wherein the auxiliary optical assembly is smaller than the binocular viewing platform.

6. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said at least one video camera has a working distance of between about 15 cm and about 45 cm.

The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the binocular viewing platform further comprises at least one redirection element comprising a reflective surface, the at least one redirection element disposed in the housing to redirect an optical path of video images from the at least one display to the plurality of oculars.

8. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the binocular viewing platform is not coupled to the ceiling.

9. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said binocular viewing platform is configured not to provide a surgical microscope view via an optical path from an ocular of said plurality of oculars through an aperture in said housing that creates a pathway to the surgical site.

10. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein, in use, the surgeon can ergonomically perform the surgery manually without the use of a surgical robotic system.

11. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein both said surgical microscope camera and said binocular viewing platform are supported by a common support stand.

The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the surgical microscope camera has an optical input for receiving light from the surgical site and the distance from the plurality of oculars to the optical input of the surgical microscope camera is not larger than the size of the binocular viewing platform such that when in use, a surgeon can ergonomically perform surgery at a surgical site beneath the auxiliary optical assembly while viewing through the plurality of oculars the output video images of the surgical site displayed on the at least one display.

13. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the at least one display has a resolution in excess of 300 ppi.

14. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a light source to provide illumination for viewing the surgical site.

15. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising an external monitor.

16. The medical apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the external monitor is disposed on an arm.

17. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising two external monitors.

18. The medical apparatus of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the two external monitors is disposed on an arm.

19. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the surgical microscope camera comprises a left-eye camera and a right-eye camera, the left-eye camera and the right-eye camera configured to provide a stereoscopic surgical microscope view of the surgical site.

20. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the at least one display comprises at least two displays configured to provide 3-D viewing of images of the surgical site.

21. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the left and right oculars are configured to provide stereoscopic vision.

22. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a plurality of auxiliary optical assemblies.

23. The medical apparatus of claim 22 , wherein each of the plurality of auxiliary optical assemblies provides a stereoscopic surgical microscope view of the surgical site.

24. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of oculars has a circular cross section.

25. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein each of the plurality of oculars has a diameter and a length, wherein the length is longer than the diameter.

26. The medical apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of oculars is adjustable for refractive error.
