Abstract

Low compression golf balls comprising a multi-layer core and a cover are disclosed. The multi-layer core comprises at least three layers, including at least one thermoset layer and at least one thermoplastic layer.

Claims (35)

1. A golf ball comprising:

an inner core layer formed from a first thermoset composition and having a diameter of from 0.50 inches to 1.30 inches and a specific gravity of from 0.90 g/cc to 1.18 g/cc;

an intermediate core layer formed from a first thermoplastic composition and having a thickness of from 0.01 inches to 0.06 inches a surface hardness of greater than 60 Shore D;

an outer core layer formed from a second thermoset composition and having a thickness of from 0.10 inches to 0.25 inches and a specific gravity of from 1.18 g/cc to 1.50 g/cc; and

a cover;

wherein the golf ball has an Atti compression of less than 60.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 55.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 50.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core layer has an Atti compression of 40 or less.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the inner core layer has an Atti compression of 30 or less.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball consists essentially of the inner core layer, the intermediate core layer, the outer core layer, and the cover, and wherein the cover is a single layer formed from a third thermoset composition.

7. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball consists essentially of the inner core layer, the intermediate core layer, the outer core layer, and the cover, and wherein the cover is a single layer formed from a second thermoplastic composition.

8. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball consists essentially of the inner core layer, the intermediate core layer, the outer core layer, and the cover, and wherein the cover consists essentially of an inner cover layer formed from a second thermoplastic composition and an outer cover layer formed from a third thermoset composition.

9. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the golf ball consists essentially of the inner core layer, the intermediate core layer, the outer core layer, and the cover, and wherein the cover consists essentially of an inner cover layer formed from a second thermoplastic composition and an outer cover layer formed from a third thermoplastic composition.

10. A golf ball comprising:

an inner core layer formed from a first thermoset composition and having a diameter of from 0.50 inches to 1.30 inches and a specific gravity of from 0.90 g/cc to 1.18 g/cc;

an intermediate core layer formed from a first thermoplastic composition and having a thickness of from 0.03 inches to 0.05 inches and a surface hardness of greater than 60 Shore D;

an outer core layer formed from a second thermoset composition and having a thickness of from 0.16 inches to 0.25 inches and a specific gravity of from 1.18 g/cc to 1.50 g/cc;

an inner cover layer formed from a second thermoplastic composition and having a thickness of from 0.01 inches to 0.05 inches, the second thermoplastic composition having a hardness of from 62 Shore D to 72 Shore D; and

an outer cover layer formed from a third thermoset composition and having a thickness of from 0.01 inches to 0.04 inches, the third thermoset composition having a hardness of less than 62 Shore D;

wherein the golf ball has an Atti compression of less than 60.

11. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 55.

12. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 50.

13. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the inner core layer has an Atti compression of 40 or less.

14. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the inner core layer has an Atti compression of 30 or less.

15. The golf ball of claim 10 , wherein the golf ball consists essentially of the inner core layer, the intermediate core layer, the outer core layer, the inner cover layer, and the outer cover layer.

16. A golf ball comprising:

an inner core layer formed from a first thermoset composition and having a diameter of from 0.50 inches to 1.30 inches and a specific gravity of from 0.90 g/cc to 1.18 g/cc;

an intermediate core layer formed from a first thermoplastic composition and having a thickness of from 0.01 inches to 0.06 inches and a surface hardness of 60 Shore D or less;

an outer core layer formed from a second thermoset composition and having a thickness of from 0.10 inches to 0.25 inches and a specific gravity of from 1.18 g/cc to 1.50 g/cc; and

a cover;

wherein the golf ball has an Atti compression of less than 60.

17. The golf ball of claim 16 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 55.

18. The golf ball of claim 16 , wherein the Atti compression of the golf ball is less than 50.

19. The golf ball of claim 16 , wherein the inner core layer has an Atti compression of 40 or less.
