Abstract

A method and a system for preventing phantom data communication links from occurring that substantially eliminates or reduces at least some of the disadvantages and problems associated with previous data communication network management techniques. In accordance with a particular embodiment of the present disclosure a method for managing data communications is provided that comprises the step of providing a central office data communication switch that comprises a plurality of data communication ports. A port controller causes the ports to estimate various physical characteristics of the incoming signals from network termination points. This processing of incoming signals leads to the precise detection of phantom links and their immediate termination. Thus, this method prevents the formation of phantom links that may occur if physical conductors which are susceptible to crosstalk interference with connected conductors erroneously convey a response signal back to an unattached port within the head-in switching system.

Claims (45)

1 . A method for identifying phantom data communication links, comprising:

receiving a signal over a data communications line;

measuring a first parameter of the signal and a second parameter of the signal;

determining an expected value of the second parameter of the signal based at least in part on the measurement of the first parameter of the signal; and

detecting a phantom data communication link based at least in part on a difference between the expected value of the second parameter of the signal and the measurement of the second parameter of the signal.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting a phantom data communication link comprises:

determining whether the difference between the expected value of the second parameter of the signal and the measurement of the second parameter of the signal satisfies a threshold.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the threshold is one from the group consisting of: an adaptive threshold and a static threshold.

4 . The method of claim 2 , adjusting at least one from the group consisting of: the measurement of the first parameter of the signal, the measurement of the second parameter of the signal, and the threshold;

wherein the adjustment is based at least in part on a presence of one or more bridge taps on the data communications line.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

declining a connection on the data communications line based at least in part on the detected phantom data communication link.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first parameter of the signal comprises a signal propagation delay or a phase shift.

7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

performing a handshake or discovery procedure with a remote node coupled to the data communications line;

wherein the measurement of the first parameter of the signal occurs during the handshake or discovery procedure.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second parameter of the signal comprises an attenuation of the signal.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the data communications line comprises one of a plurality of data communications lines coupled to a central office (CO) modem, the method further comprising:

aligning in frequency and time each of a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE) modems associated with the plurality of data communications lines.

10 . A method for identifying phantom data communication links, comprising:

receiving a signal over a data communications line;

measuring a first parameter of the signal and a second parameter of the signal;

computing a first estimate of a physical attribute of the data communications line and a second estimate of the physical attribute of the data communications line, wherein the first estimate is based at least in part on the measurement of the first parameter and the second estimate is based at least in part on the measurement of the second parameter; and

detecting a phantom data communication link based at least in part on a difference between the first estimate and the second estimate.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein detecting a phantom data communication link comprises:

determining whether the difference between the first estimate and the second estimate satisfies a threshold.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the threshold is one from the group consisting of: an adaptive threshold and a static threshold.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

adjusting at least one from the group consisting of: the measurement of the first parameter of the signal, the measurement of the second parameter of the signal, and the threshold;

wherein the adjustment is based at least in part on a presence of one or more bridge taps on the data communications line.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first parameter of the signal comprises a signal propagation delay or a phase shift.

15 . The method of claim 14 , performing a handshake or discovery procedure with a remote node coupled to the data communications line;

wherein the measurement of the first parameter of the signal occurs during the handshake or discovery procedure.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second parameter of the signal comprises an attenuation of the signal.

17 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the data communications line comprises one of a plurality of data communications lines coupled to a central office (CO) modem, the method further comprising:

aligning in frequency and time each of a plurality of customer premises equipment (CPE) modems associated with the plurality of data communications lines.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the physical attribute of the data communications line comprises a loop length.

19 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

declining a connection on the data communications line based at least in part on the detected phantom data communication link.

20 . An apparatus for identifying phantom data communication links, comprising:

a receive path to receive a signal over a data communications line;

a computing device configured to:

measure a first parameter of the signal and a second parameter of the signal;

determine an expected value of the second parameter of the signal based at least in part on the measurement of the first parameter of the signal; and

detect a phantom data communication link based at least in part on a difference between the expected value of the second parameter of the signal and the measurement of the second parameter of the signal.
