Abstract

An optical assembly includes a wedge optic. The wedge optic includes an input edge, an angled surface adjacent the input edge, and an unangled surface adjacent the input edge and opposite the angled surface. The optical assembly further includes an LED lighting system optically coupled to the input edge such that unmodulated light from the LED lighting system enters the wedge optic through the input edge. The angled surface reflects the unmodulated light out of the unangled surface to irradiate a reflective image display to produce an image of modulated light that is reflected back through the unangled surface and the angled surface.

Claims (32)

1 . An optical assembly, comprising:

a wedge optic including an input edge, an angled surface adjacent the input edge, and an unangled surface adjacent the input edge and opposite the angled surface; and

an LED lighting system optically coupled to the input edge;

wherein unmodulated light from the LED lighting system enters the wedge optic through the input edge; and

wherein the angled surface reflects the unmodulated light out of the unangled surface to irradiate a reflective image display to produce an image of modulated light that is reflected back through the unangled surface and the angled surface.

2 . The optical assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a light-redirecting element positioned to receive the modulated light reflected through the unangled surface and the angled surface.

3 . The optical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a multi-layer coating.

4 . The optical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a grating.

5 . The optical assembly of claim 2 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a diffractive coating.

6 . The optical assembly of claim 1 , wherein the wedge optic is a first wedge optic, the optical assembly further comprises a second wedge optic, and the light-redirecting element is optically intermediate the first wedge optic and the second wedge optic.

7 . The optical assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a grating positioned to receive the modulated light reflected through the unangled surface and the angled surface.

8 . The optical assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a diffractive coating positioned to receive the modulated light reflected through the unangled surface and the angled surface.

9 . An optical assembly, comprising:

a first wedge optic including an input edge, an angled surface adjacent the input edge, and an unangled surface adjacent the input edge and opposite the angled surface;

an LED lighting system optically coupled to the input edge; and

a light-redirecting element optically coupled to the angled surface of the first wedge optic;

wherein unmodulated light from the LED lighting system enters the first wedge optic through the input edge; and

wherein the angled surface reflects the unmodulated light out of the unangled surface to irradiate a reflective image display to produce an image of modulated light that is reflected back through the unangled surface and the angled surface to the light-redirecting element.

10 . The optical assembly of claim 9 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a multi-layer coating.

11 . The optical assembly of claim 9 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a grating.

12 . The optical assembly of claim 9 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a diffractive coating.

13 . The optical assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a second wedge optic, wherein the light-redirecting element is optically intermediate the first wedge optic and the second wedge optic.

14 . An optical assembly, comprising:

a first wedge optic including an input edge, an angled surface adjacent the input edge, and an unangled surface adjacent the input edge and opposite the angled surface;

an LED lighting system optically coupled to the input edge;

a light-redirecting element optically coupled to the angled surface of the first wedge optic;

a second wedge optic optically coupled to the light-redirecting element opposite the first wedge optic;

wherein unmodulated light from the LED lighting system enters the first wedge optic through the input edge; and

wherein the angled surface reflects the unmodulated light out of the unangled surface to irradiate a reflective image display to produce an image of modulated light that is reflected back through the unangled surface and the angled surface to the light-redirecting element and the second wedge optic.

15 . The optical assembly of claim 14 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a multi-layer coating.

16 . The optical assembly of claim 14 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a grating.

17 . The optical assembly of claim 14 , wherein the light-redirecting element includes a diffractive coating.
