Abstract

Embodiments include a system for determining cardiovascular information for a patient. The system may include at least one computer system configured to receive patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient's heart, and create a three-dimensional model representing at least a portion of the patient's heart based on the patient-specific data. The at least one computer system may be further configured to create a physics-based model relating to a blood flow characteristic of the patient's heart and determine a fractional flow reserve within the patient's heart based on the three-dimensional model and the physics-based model.

determine at least one inlet boundary condition and at least one outlet boundary condition of the boundary condition model based, at least in part, on the total cardiac output.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer system configured to generate a one-dimensional blood flow model is further configured to:

determine centerlines of coronary arteries of the anatomical structure; and

determine, within the coronary arteries of the anatomical structure, pressure and flow along the centerlines.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the patient-specific data is obtained using angiography.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the determining the blood flow characteristic is performed while the patient remains catheterized.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computer system is further configured to:

determine, for at least one of coronary arteries of the anatomical structure, blood flow over at least one phase of the cardiac cycle; and

determine the blood flow characteristic of the patient, at least in part, based on the blood flow over the at least one phase of the cardiac cycle.

8. A computer-implemented method for image processing to determine cardiovascular information for a patient, the method comprising:

receiving patient-specific data regarding a geometry of an anatomical structure of the patient, the anatomical structure including at least a portion of a plurality of coronary arteries emanating from the patient's aorta;

creating a three-dimensional geometric model representing the anatomical structure using the patient-specific data;

generating a one-dimensional blood flow model defining blood flow through the anatomical structure of the patient using the three-dimensional geometric model;

generating a pressure model using the three-dimensional geometric model, wherein the pressure model defines blood pressure at two or more locations within the anatomical structure represented by the three-dimensional geometric model; and

determining at least one blood flow characteristic within the anatomical structure using the pressure model and the one-dimensional blood flow model, wherein the blood flow characteristic is a ratio of pressures at two or more locations within the anatomical structure.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the patient-specific data corresponds to the patient being under a physiological condition of rest.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

determining, based on the three-dimensional geometric model, a size of coronary arteries within the anatomical structure;

determining total cardiac output based on the size of coronary arteries within the anatomical structure; and

determining at least one inlet boundary condition and at least one outlet boundary condition of the boundary condition model based, at least in part, on the total cardiac output.
