Abstract

According to principles of the embodiments as disclosed herein, a device that determines its own orientation and selects an appropriately oriented antenna based on the device's orientation is provided. The device may include a housing including an interior having a base and a top and a first sidewall extending from a perimeter of the base to the top. A plurality of antenna may be coupled to the housing one or more orientation sensors may also be coupled to the housing. A controller may be electrically coupled to each of the plurality of antenna and the one or more orientation sensors, and may be configured to receive information from the one or more orientation sensors, determine an orientation of the housing, and select one of the plurality of antenna to transmit and receive data. A transceiver may be located within the housing and at least one of the plurality of antenna may be being electrically coupled to the antenna.

Claims (43)

1. A system, comprising:

a set top box including:

a housing including an interior having a base and a top and a first sidewall extending from a perimeter of the base to the top;

a plurality of antennas contained within the housing in different orientations, wherein a first of the plurality of antennas is oriented in a first direction that is orthogonal to a second direction in which a second of the plurality of antennas is oriented and a third direction in which a third of the plurality of antennas is oriented;

one or more orientation sensors coupled to the housing;

a controller coupled to the housing and electrically coupled to each of the plurality of antennas and the one or more orientation sensors, the controller configured to receive information from the one or more orientation sensors, determine an orientation of the housing, and select one of the plurality of antenna; and

a transceiver within the housing, the controller configured to selectively couple the transceiver to one or more of the plurality of antenna;

wherein the set top box is configured to transmit or receive information to and from various other devices that are connected to a wireless communication network, the information including one or more of video, multi-media files, and broadcast television.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first of the one or more orientation sensors is a proximity sensor coupled to the housing and configured to sense if an object external to the housing is proximate the housing, the controller configured to receive proximity information from the proximity sensor and determine an orientation of the housing and select one of the plurality of antennas based on the orientation of the housing.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the proximity sensor is coupled at a first side of the housing; and

wherein

the first of the plurality of antennas is located a first distance from the proximity sensor; and

the second of the plurality of antennas is located a second distance from the proximity sensor, the controller configured to select the first of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the object is proximate the housing and the second of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines no object is proximate the housing.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a stand coupled to the housing of the set top box and configured to orient the housing in a first orientation; and

wherein the set top box further comprises:

a proximity sensor configured to sense the proximity of the stand to the housing, the controller configured to select the first of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is proximate the housing and to select the second of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is not proximate the housing.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first of the one or more orientation sensors is an accelerometer coupled to the housing configured to sense acceleration due to gravity on the housing, the controller configured to receive acceleration information from the accelerometer and determine an orientation of the housing and select one of the plurality of antennas based on the orientation of the housing.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein a first of the one or more orientation sensors is a gyroscope coupled to the housing configured to sense an angular orientation of the housing, the controller configured to receive angular orientation information from the gyroscope and determine an orientation of the housing and select one of the plurality of antennas based on the orientation of the housing.

7. The system of claim 4 ,

wherein the proximity sensor is a limit switch configured to switch between a first state when the stand is proximate a housing and a second state when the stand is not proximate the housing, the controller configured to select the first of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is proximate the housing and the second of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is not proximate the housing.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the set top box further comprises:

a switch having an input and a plurality of outputs, the input electrically coupled to the transceiver and each of the plurality of outputs electrically coupled to a respective one of the plurality of antenna, the controller configured to electrically couple the transceiver to one of the plurality of antennas.

9. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a stand coupled to the housing of the set top box; and

wherein the set top box further comprises:

a proximity sensor configured to sense the position of the stand, the controller configured to select the first of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is in the retracted position and to select the second of the plurality of antennas when the controller determines the stand is in the extended position.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first of the plurality of antennas is a set of antennas.

11. A method, comprising:

determining an orientation of a housing of a set top box including:

receiving an indication of orientation of the housing from an orientation sensor within the housing, the housing having a plurality of antennas contained therein in different orientations, wherein a first of the plurality of antennas is oriented in a first direction that is orthogonal to a second direction in which a second of the plurality of antennas is oriented and a third direction in which a third of the plurality of antennas is oriented; and

determining an orientation of the housing based on the indication of orientation, wherein the determining the orientation of the housing includes determining whether a base is physically coupled to the housing;

selecting the first of the plurality of antennas within the housing based on the orientation of the housing;

electrically connecting the first of the plurality of antennas to a transceiver; and

transmitting data on the first of the plurality of antennas from the transceiver;

wherein the set top box transmits or receives information to and from various other devices that are connected to a wireless communication network, the information including one or more of video, multi-media files, and broadcast television.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the orientation of the housing based on the indication of orientation includes:

determining the orientation of the housing relative to the direction of the force of gravity.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the orientation of the housing based on the indication of orientation includes:

determining whether a base that is coupled to the housing is in an extended or retracted position.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining whether an object is proximate the housing; and

selecting the first of the plurality of antennas if the object is proximate the housing and selecting the second of the plurality of antennas if the object is not proximate the housing.
