Abstract

Various forms are directed to systems and methods for operating a surgical instrument that includes a generator configured to provide an energy signal for treating tissue. The generator includes one or more ports for delivering the energy signal to one or more surgical instruments configured to treat tissue, and the one or more surgical instruments are electrically coupled to the respective one or more ports simultaneously. The energy signal includes an energy component comprising one or more energy modalities that is delivered through the one or more ports. The one or more energy modalities includes ultrasonic, bipolar radio frequency (RF), monopolar RF, reversible electroporation, irreversible electroporation, or microwave component, or any combination thereof.

Claims (32)

1 . An apparatus for operating a surgical instrument, comprising:

a generator configured to provide an energy signal for treating tissue, the generator comprising one or more ports for delivering the energy signal to one or more surgical instruments configured to treat tissue, the one or more surgical instruments being electrically coupled to the respective one or more ports simultaneously,

wherein the energy signal comprises an energy component comprising one or more energy modalities that is delivered through the one or more ports.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ports are integrated into the generator.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ports are separate from the generator and electrically coupled to the generator.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the generator is configured to deliver the energy signal to any one of the one or more ports.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the generator is configured to deliver the energy signal to any combination of the one or more ports.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a one ore more electrical measurement components coupled to the one or more ports to measure an electrical quantity delivered from the generator to the one or more surgical instruments coupled to the respective one or more ports.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the electrical quantity is either a voltage or a current.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a current monitor, wherein the generator is configured to monitor the activity of each of the one or more surgical instruments using the current monitor.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the generator is configured to generate a separate energy signal for each of the one or more surgical instruments.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more energy modalities comprises any one of ultrasonic component, a bipolar radio frequency (RF) component, a monopolar RF component, a reversible electroporation component, an irreversible electroporation component, or a microwave component, or any combination thereof.

11 . A method of operating a surgical instrument, the method comprising:

providing, by a generator, an energy signal for treating tissue, the generator comprising one or more ports for delivering the energy signal to one or more surgical instruments configured to treat tissue, the one or more surgical instruments being electrically coupled to the respective one or more ports simultaneously,

wherein the energy signal comprises an energy component comprising one or more energy modalities that is delivered through the one or more ports.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising delivering, by the generator, the energy signal to any one of the one or more ports.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising delivering, by the generator, the energy signal to any combination of the one or more ports.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising measuring, by a first and second measurement component coupled to the first and second ports, an electrical quantity delivered from the generator to the one or more surgical instruments coupled to the respective one or more ports.

15 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising monitoring, by the generator, the activity of the one or more surgical instruments using a current monitor.

16 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising generating, by the generator, a separate energy signal for the one or more second surgical instruments.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the one or more energy modalities comprises any one of ultrasonic component, a bipolar radio frequency (RF) component, a monopolar RF component, a reversible electroporation component, an irreversible electroporation component, or a microwave component, or any combination thereof.

18 . An apparatus for providing a combined energy modality power output, the generator comprising:

an adapter comprising an energy storage circuit, wherein the energy storage circuit comprises a switching mechanism configured to receive at least one combined energy modality power input from a generator and provide one or more combined energy modality power outputs;

a communication interface; and

a presence interface.

19 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the adapter further comprises a current, a voltage, or a power monitoring circuit, or any combination thereof.

20 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the adapter further comprises at least one control circuit.

21 . The apparatus of claim 18 , further comprising a presence element to uniquely identify the adapter.

22 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the communication interface comprises a communications circuit to receive communications to or from the generator.

23 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the energy storage circuit comprises a storage control component, a storage monitoring component, or a device power monitoring component, or any combination thereof.

24 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the energy storage circuit comprises a data storage component.

25 . The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the adapter is configured to provide a direct current (DC) output.
