Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed that authenticate devices or users, and enable playback of secured streaming content through a media player. In one embodiment, the invention is a system for receiving secure content over an unmanaged network, including a security application configured operate on a user device with access to a network, where the security application is configured to receive a request for playlist data from the media player, send a playlist request to a content server, receive playlist data from the content server, send playlist data to a media player, receive a security access request from the media player, send a security access request to a security server, receive security access data from the security server; and send security access data to a media player.

Claims (27)

1. A system for obtaining information of media content consumption, comprising:

a user device in network communication with a set of servers, the user device comprising:

a media player application;

a security application;

wherein the security application LS configured to:

receive a set of playlist data from the set of servers, wherein the set of playlist data comprises a set of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) for portions of available content;

modify the set of URIs of the set of playlist data, where the modified set of URIs routes requests for content from the media player application through the security application instead of a location identified in the unmodified set of URIs;

send at least a portion of the received set of playlist data that includes the set of modified URIs to the media player application;

receive, from the media player application, a first request for content based upon the set of modified URIs;

obtain information related to content consumption;

store the obtained information related to the content consumption in the set of servers; and

send a second request to the set of servers based upon the received first request from the media player application, wherein the media player application receives at least a portion of the requested content for playback based on the second request.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the content consumption comprises location of the content for playback.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the content consumption comprises bitrate of the content for playback.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the content consumption comprises content type of the content for playback.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the content consumption further comprises a time stamp of when the content for playback is accessed by the media player application.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the content consumption further comprises a length of time the content for playback is accessed by the media player application.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the security application is further configured to obtain device data from the user device and send at least a portion of the obtained device data to the set of servers.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device data comprises information regarding user device type.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device data comprises information regarding user device output capabilities.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device data comprises information regarding a user's age.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device data comprises information regarding a geographical location of the user device.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein the device data comprises information regarding the user device network access credentials.

13. The system of claim 7 , wherein the security application is further configured to receive security access data comprising keys to decrypt encrypted content.

14. The system of claim 7 , wherein the security application is further configured to receive targeted advertisement from the set of servers based upon the obtained device data.

15. The system of claim 7 , wherein the security application is further configured to receive service improvements from the set of servers based upon the obtained device data.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the security application is further configured to receive content recommendations from the set of servers based upon the information related to the content consumption.
