Abstract

A protective case for an electronic device having an antenna includes a first case member and a second case member. The first case member includes at least two metallic case portions joined to each other by at least one electrical insulator segment that electrically isolates the at least two metallic case portions from each other to reduce electromagnetic interference between the first case member and the antenna of the electronic device. The second case member that attaches to the first case member to form an enclosure that at least partially encloses the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective case.

Claims (24)

1. A protective case for an electronic device having an antenna, the protective case comprising:

a first case member including at least two metallic case portions joined to each other by at least one electrical insulator segment that electrically isolates the at least two metallic case portions of the first case member from each other to reduce electromagnetic interference between the first case member and the antenna of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective case; and

a second case member that attaches to the first case member to form an enclosure that at least partially encloses the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective case.

2. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the at least one electrical insulator segment comprises a dielectric material.

3. The protective case of claim 2 wherein the dielectric material comprises a polymer, an organic polymer, porcelain, ceramic, or glass.

4. The protective case of claim 1 wherein the at least one electrical insulator segment includes at least two electrical insulator segments.

5. The protective case of claim 1 , wherein the second case member includes at least two metallic case portions joined to each other by at least one electrical insulator segment.

6. The protective case of claim 5 , wherein the second case member is electrically isolated from the first case member.

7. The protective case of claim 1 further comprising a hinge and wherein the first case member is attached to the second case member by the hinge to form the enclosure.

8. The protective case of claim 7 wherein one of the first case member and the second case member includes a first latch mechanism and the other of the first case member and the second case member includes a second latch mechanism that interfaces with the first latch mechanism to temporarily secure the protective case in a closed position.

9. The protective case of claim 1 further comprising a cushion layer for receiving the electronic device in the protective case.

10. The protective case of claim 9 wherein the cushion layer is overmolded onto one of the first case member and the second case member.

11. The protective case of claim 1 further comprising a button actuator in one the first case member and the second case member to enable a user to actuate a button of the installed electronic device from outside the protective case using the button actuator.

12. The protective case of claim 1 wherein one of the first case member and the second case member includes an aperture through which an interactive control panel of the electronic device is accessible by a user when the electronic device is installed in the protective case.

13. The protective case of claim 12 wherein the aperture is at least partially covered by a transparent membrane through which the interactive control panel of the electronic device can be operated by the user.

14. A protective case for an electronic device having an antenna, the protective case comprising:

a first case element including a first metallic case portion and a second metallic case portion, the second metallic case portion joined to the first metallic case portion by a dielectric material that electrically isolates the second metallic case portion from the first metallic case portion to reduce any electromagnetic interference of the first case element to the antenna of the electronic device; and

a second case element that interfaces with the first case element to form an enclosure that at least partially encloses the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective case.

15. The protective case of claim 14 wherein the dielectric material comprises a polymer, an organic polymer, porcelain, ceramic, or glass.

16. The protective case of claim 14 , wherein the second case element includes at least two electrically isolated metallic case portions.

17. The protective case of claim 14 further comprising a hinge and wherein the first case element is attached to the second case element by the hinge to form the enclosure and the protective case has a closed position and an open position for receiving the electronic device.

18. The protective case of claim 14 further comprising a cushioning layer for receiving the electronic device in the protective case.

19. A protective cover for an electronic device having an antenna, the protective cover comprising a case member including a cavity for receiving the electronic device, the case member at least partially enclosing the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the cavity of the case member, the case member including at least two case portions, the at least two case portions of the case member each comprising one or more metallic materials, the at least two case portions joined to each other by a dielectric material that electrically isolates the at least two case portions from each other to reduce any electromagnetic interference between the case member and the antenna of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective cover.

20. The protective cover of claim 19 wherein the at least two case portions are three case portions each comprising the one or more metallic materials and wherein the three case portions are joined to each other by the dielectric material.
